What Is a Sign Designer?

A sign designer is a graphic design specialist who creates the visual elements of a sign, such as a billboard, window display, or advertisement. Your duties and responsibilities in this career are to consult with art directors and other creative designers in your department to understand what kind of sign your client wants. This may include specifications such as color scheme, appropriate brand logos, and other visual elements that fit in with the campaign or goals. You then design a layout for the clients to review. If it meets their approval, you enter production and ensure that you have taken care of all physical components.

What is the difference between Sign Designer vs Sign Painter?

AspectSign DesignerSign Painter

Sign Designers focus on creating visual concepts using digital tools and design principles, often working in studios or offices. Sign Painters specialize in hand-painting signs, emphasizing craftsmanship and artistic skill. While both roles contribute to signage, Sign Designers handle the conceptual and digital aspects, whereas Sign Painters bring those designs to life through manual painting techniques.

What are some common challenges Sign Designers face when working on projects with tight deadlines?

Sign Designers often need to balance creativity with efficiency, especially when clients require fast turnaround times. Meeting tight deadlines can be challenging due to the need for approvals, revisions, and coordination with production teams. Effective communication with clients and colleagues, as well as strong time management skills, are essential to deliver high-quality designs on time. Familiarity with industry-standard software and the ability to quickly adapt to changing project requirements also help streamline the process.

What does a Sign Designer do?

A Sign Designer is responsible for creating visual concepts and designs for various types of signs, such as storefront signage, billboards, wayfinding systems, and vehicle wraps. They work closely with clients to understand branding needs and ensure the signage is visually appealing, effective, and compliant with local regulations. Sign Designers use graphic design software to produce layouts, select materials, and sometimes oversee the fabrication and installation process. Their work is crucial in helping businesses communicate messages and attract customers through effective visual communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sign Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sign Designer, you need proficiency in graphic design principles, spatial awareness, and familiarity with materials and manufacturing processes, often supported by a degree or certification in graphic or industrial design. Expertise in design software like Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and knowledge of signage regulations is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients and production teams make a designer stand out. These skills ensure the creation of visually compelling, functional, and compliant signage that meets client needs and industry standards.

Job description

Who WE Are: FASTSIGNS of Orange is a family owned, independently operated franchisee of FASTSIGNS. We are a new center rising from the chaos of the pandemic and just started this summer to be the graphics and signage partner of choice for our community! We consult, design, produce, source, and install visual communication assets for our customers. i.e. we don't just make signs!
As a family owned center, we are committed to building an enduring business through providing long term careers for our staff to build their skills and professional careers, being the partner and advisor of choice to businesses we serve for all their visual communication needs, and creating a profitable business from which we can give back to our community. And have fun and make some money along the way of course! :)
Job Title: Commercial Sign Production/Installation Team member
Key Responsibilities:
  • Produce, or assist the Production Lead to make, finished products for our customers
  • Assist with installation as needed
  • Work with the sales and installation team members to ensure customer satisfaction with the finished products
  • Work with the sales team to translate estimates and orders in the order system to create proofs and layouts
  • Design customer orders with the focus on the final product to factor in how it will be produced in center or through our vendors
  • Scheduling the daily workflow of graphics design, printing, production, and installation

This position is for you if:
  • You have a Great ATTITUDE: enjoy learning, work best in a team, and have a strong sense of personal accountability to create results for yourself and your team
  • Enjoy problem solving to meet customer's needs, and go the extra step to help them create a vision of what the solution could look like
  • Detail oriented and organized to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow with the team and for our customers (You will be doing some light project management each day to coordinate with the sales and install team members on where each order is in the workflow and help to prioritize the work)
  • Have at least 2 years experience in both commercial sign production (physically operating large format vinyl printers and plotters) and sign installation
  • Fluent with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (That is the main graphics software we use)
  • Fluent with Google's G-Suite (We use that heavily as part of our working environment)
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50lbs (You may need to help our with the delivery of graphics to the customer site, or else help customers load products into their vehicles from our center)
  • Can climb ladders (You may have to occasionally assist on complex installs with the Production Lead)

Other "nice" to haves that will put you on the top of our list:
  • Worked at other FASTSIGNS centers, or other similar competitors in the industry
  • Extensive graphics installation experience - dimensional, monument, electrical, car wraps, etc
  • Extensive experience with large format printing and/or graphics/signage production - managing the printing process as well as mounting onto substrates

This position is NOT for you if:
  • You are primarily driven by creating sophisticated graphic designs and branding campaigns (we're not a marketing agency and so the graphics you will primarily be involved in have real world production and installation limitations though they are still visually stunning with the technology we use to produce them)
  • You do not like to work with your hands to use the printer, plotter, laminator, and other production in our center to produce the final end product for our customers
  • You get frazzled by busyness and multiple workstreams, and managing the work daily along with the many team members involved with delivering quality products and services to our customers daily
  • You don't get excited to engage and build relationships with customers, and would rather stay isolated in front of a screen
  • You are not curious about new technologies in materials and production and prefer to stick with only what you've done before and is easiest
  • You don't like working with your hands to bring your designs to reality and prefer digital graphics only, and you definitely don't see yourself getting on a ladder to help install the graphics from time to time
  • You are looking to clock out at 5pm every day and have the same exact schedule every day

If all this still sounds good to you, we provide:
  • Paid Vacation, Holidays, and Sick days
  • Benefits
  • Paid travel to training and conventions out of state as you succeed in the role
  • Opportunities to develop your career and train for other roles, e.g. Graphics & Production Lead, Production Manager, Center Manager, as our Center expands and grows

Compensation: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour
At FASTSIGNS, every day is unique and presents exciting opportunities, including new ways to use your talent and grow your skills. We have a large network of independently owned locations - both locally and internationally - who offer competitive pay and ongoing training opportunities.
