Job description

Should Costing Engineer

 Location: San Jose, California (Onsite)
Experience: 7–10 Years
Education: B.E. in Mechanical Engineering


Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced Should Costing Engineer with strong expertise in automotive or manufacturing industries. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing component-level cost analysis, manufacturing cost breakdowns, and supplier negotiation support for engineering parts and assemblies.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop should cost models for automotive and manufacturing components
  • Perform target costing and cost benchmarking for new parts
  • Analyze supplier quotations and prepare detailed negotiation reports for commodity teams
  • Identify key cost drivers, savings opportunities, and optimization strategies
  • Perform manufacturing process selection, machine planning, and cycle time calculations
  • Evaluate machine hourly rates (MHR), overheads, and profit margins
  • Conduct cost mapping for engineering parts and assemblies
  • Support supplier negotiations with data-driven cost breakdowns
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Work with cross-functional teams including engineering, sourcing, and supply chain
 

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Mandatory)
  • 7–10 years of experience in Should Costing / Cost Engineering
  • Strong experience in automotive, tractor, off-highway (T&OH), or manufacturing industries
  • Hands-on knowledge of manufacturing processes:
    • Sheet Metal (must have)
    • Plastics (must have)
    • Machining, Rubber, Assemblies
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Machine selection
    • Cycle time calculation
    • Cost drivers and estimation techniques
    • MHR (Machine Hour Rate), overheads, profit modeling
  • Experience in GD&T and engineering drawing interpretation
  • Experience with ERP/SAP systems
 
 

Preferred Skills:
  • Hands-on experience with should costing tools:
    • aPriori
    • Costimator
    • TcPCM
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills
  • Experience in supplier cost breakdown and sourcing support
 
 

 Additional Information:
  • Onsite role in San Jose, CA
  • Must have strong manufacturing cost engineering background
  • Automotive or related industry experience is highly preferred
