What is a Shopify manager?

A Shopify Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and optimizing an online store that uses the Shopify e-commerce platform. Their duties typically include managing product listings, processing orders, handling customer inquiries, implementing marketing strategies, and analyzing sales data to boost performance. They also coordinate with other team members, such as designers and marketers, to ensure the store runs smoothly and efficiently. Shopify Managers need to stay updated on e-commerce trends and Shopify updates to maximize the store’s success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Manager, you need expertise in e-commerce strategy, product listing management, and online merchandising, typically backed by experience in digital retail platforms. Familiarity with Shopify's dashboard, analytics tools, third-party app integrations, and possibly certifications like Shopify Partner or Shopify Expert are highly valued. Strong organizational skills, creative problem-solving, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure seamless store operations, drive sales growth, and enhance the overall customer experience on the Shopify platform.

What are some common challenges a Shopify manager faces when scaling an online store, and how can they address them?

Shopify Managers often encounter challenges such as maintaining website performance during high-traffic periods, integrating third-party apps, and ensuring a seamless customer experience as the store grows. To address these, they regularly monitor site analytics, collaborate with developers to optimize site speed, and work closely with marketing and customer service teams to streamline operations. Proactively staying updated with Shopify's latest features and best practices also helps in overcoming scaling hurdles effectively.

Job description

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Summary:

Harbour is looking for a Junior Shopify Developer / Storefront Manager to support the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement of our Shopify storefronts. This role is under the IT Department, and sits at the intersection of e-commerce operations and light development — you'll be responsible for keeping our product and metadata clean and accurate, maintaining storefront applications, supporting integrations with our broader systems, and contributing to Shopify theme updates. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career who wants to grow their technical skill set while owning meaningful pieces of our e-commerce infrastructure.

Responsibilities:Product & Metadata Management
  • Maintain and audit product data across the Shopify catalog (titles, descriptions, variants, images, pricing, collections)
  • Manage metafields and metadata structures to support merchandising, SEO, and app functionality
  • Ensure data consistency between Shopify and connected systems (ERP, PIM, etc.)
Storefront & Application Maintenance
  • Perform general Shopify storefront maintenance, including monitoring app health, resolving broken links/pages, and troubleshooting storefront issues
  • Support and maintain third-party Shopify apps and their configurations
  • Make Shopify theme edits and updates (Liquid, HTML/CSS/JS) for layout, content, and functionality changes
  • Maintain internal documentation for storefront configurations, processes, and troubleshooting guide
Reporting
  • Build and maintain recurring reports on storefront performance, product data health, and general e-commerce metrics
  • Support ad hoc reporting requests from marketing, operations, and leadership
Integration & Middleware (Preferred not required)
  • Assist with maintaining integrations between Shopify and other business systems (ERP, order management, marketing platforms)
  • Exposure to or interest in Node.js is a plus — candidates comfortable reading/writing basic middleware code, working with REST APIs, or supporting webhook-based integrations will have opportunity to grow into this responsibility
  • Support troubleshooting of data sync issues between Shopify and connected platforms

Qualifications:
  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience working within Shopify (Shopify Plus experience a plus)
  • Comfortable navigating Shopify Admin, product/inventory management, and basic Liquid templating
  • Familiarity with metafields, metaobjects, and how Shopify data structures work
  • Strong attention to detail — comfortable working in spreadsheets and data sets to identify and fix inconsistencies
  • Basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Ability to write clear documentation and communicate technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
  • Organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing multiple ongoing maintenance tasks
Nice to have
  • Experience with Node.js or general backend/API development
  • Exposure to ERP systems (NetSuite or similar) or middleware/integration tools
  • Familiarity with NetSuite RESTlets or SuiteScript
  • Experience with IPaaS Tools ( Celigo )
  • Experience with reporting/BI tools.
Employment Information:
Compensation:  $60,000-70,000/annually
