What does a Shopify Designer do?

A Shopify Designer is responsible for creating and customizing the visual layout, user experience, and branding of Shopify stores. They use design tools, HTML/CSS, and Liquid (Shopify's templating language) to modify themes, ensuring a seamless and visually appealing shopping experience. They collaborate with clients or teams to design storefronts that align with brand identity and optimize conversions. Additionally, they may enhance site functionality by integrating apps and custom features. Their goal is to create high-quality, engaging online stores that drive sales and provide a great user experience.

What are some typical challenges Shopify Designers face and how can they overcome them?

Shopify Designers often encounter challenges like ensuring seamless mobile responsiveness, balancing aesthetic design with site performance, and integrating custom features within Shopify's theme limitations. Overcoming these challenges typically involves staying updated with the latest platform updates, collaborating closely with developers, and conducting thorough testing across devices and browsers. Being proactive in communication with clients helps clarify expectations and reduce the risk of rework. Embracing continuous learning and problem-solving is key to delivering high-quality, conversion-focused Shopify stores.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Shopify Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Designer, you need strong skills in web design, UI/UX principles, and a solid understanding of Shopify’s platform and Liquid templating language. Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Shopify’s backend and theme customization interfaces is crucial, while certifications in web design or Shopify platform use can be advantageous. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail help designers effectively interpret client needs and collaborate with other team members. These skills are vital for creating visually appealing, user-friendly e-commerce stores that meet business goals and drive sales.

How much do Shopify designers make?

Shopify designers typically earn between $50,000 and $85,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Freelance designers may charge hourly rates ranging from $25 to $100 or more, based on project complexity and expertise in tools like Shopify Liquid and design software.

Job description

Fireclay Tile is here to revolutionize the tile and design industry. By implementing an innovative digital platform paired with unmatched artisan-crafted products and client service, we've made it easier than ever to specify and purchase beautiful, sustainable tile sourced and handcrafted in the US. Our tireless commitment to innovation, transparency, and sustainability has not gone unrecognized. We aim to grow 25-35% annually and are the first tile company recognized as a B Corp for how we use Business as a Force for Good. With an innovative product, an ambitious team, and an inspiring mission, we're changing the way you think about tile. Come join the makers who support the dreamers!
The Team You'll Work With ...
As the AI-First UI/UX Designer, you will be an integral part of our talented Technology team, collaborating to lead UI/UX design for fireclaytile.com - owning design for all development on our Shopify Plus site, handling backend Shopify configuration, and directing the work of our developers. You will keep our e-commerce experience beautiful, fast, and converting while partnering with our internal dev team and Growth Marketing on custom development, landing pages, and CRO. Reporting to the VP of Technology, this position will be Remote within the US. Our culture thrives on professional development, ongoing training, and opportunities for growth within the organization. This is a salary position and pays $120,000 - $150,000.
Meet the Hiring Manager, Dave Meagher!
What You'll Achieve ...
  • Own UI/UX design for fireclaytile.com end to end - from concept through Figma through build-ready specs that ship
  • Handle Shopify Plus backend configuration: products, collections, metafields, checkout, apps, navigation, and discounts
  • Lead design for custom development projects with our internal dev team, including our Salesforce/Shopify integration and sample ordering experience
  • Partner with Growth Marketing on landing pages, CRO experiments, and site performance - with heavy use of AI tooling (Claude) to multiply your output
  • Work directly with leadership team to understand market direction

What We Look For in You ...
  • An AI-First UI/UX Designer with a robust AI workflow and toolset. All applicants will be asked to demo current AI usage.
  • 5+ years of UI/UX design experience for e-commerce, with significant Shopify (ideally Shopify Plus) depth
  • Expert in Figma - you produce build-ready specs developers can execute without back-and-forth
  • Fluent in the Shopify Plus admin, with enough HTML/CSS/Liquid literacy to QA developer work and prototype small changes
  • Experienced in the Home category (tile, flooring, furniture, fixtures, building materials, décor) - you understand visual-first merchandising, sample-driven purchase journeys, and long consideration cycles
  • Self-directed and comfortable owning a function solo - including directing remote/offshore developers - with strong e-commerce instincts for conversion, page speed, mobile-first, and accessibility

Why Fireclay?
Beyond the role itself, here's what makes Fireclay Tile a special place to work:

  • Growth and Innovation: We are committed to "25-35% annual growth" and are revolutionizing the tile and design industry.
  • Our Culture: We foster a culture of professional development, ongoing training, and opportunities for growth.
  • Our Benefits: We offer a comprehensive compensation package, including medical, dental, vision, a 4% 401(k) match, PTO (non-exempt) or FTO (exempt), sick time, and other perks. Visit Fireclaybenefits.com to view details of our benefits and perks offered.

Serving as a Fireclay Tile Brand Ambassador, representing our core values including:

The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, stock options, and discretionary bonus. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a teammate receives an offer of employment.
