Job description

The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the equipment and maintenance shop, including mechanics, shop personnel, equipment maintenance, preventive maintenance, parts inventory, inspections, and repair coordination.
This position works closely with field Superintendents, Mechanics, and Operations to ensure company vehicles and heavy equipment are properly maintained, repaired, inspected, and available to support construction operations. The Shop Manager is also responsible for maintaining accurate records, monitoring shop productivity, controlling parts inventory, and ensuring equipment-related costs and damages are properly documented.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the equipment and maintenance shop.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and provide direction to Mechanics, Lowboy Drivers, and shop personnel.
  • Review employee timecards daily for accuracy and proper job/equipment coding.
  • Monitor daily maintenance, repair, and inspection requests and prioritize work based on operational needs.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Communicate with jobsite Superintendents and Mechanics regarding equipment needs, repairs, availability, and scheduling.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance schedules for company vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ensure required inspections and maintenance are completed on schedule.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of equipment parts, filters, fluids, and other supplies required for routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Order filters, parts, and materials needed for preventive maintenance services.
  • Track parts usage and maintain organized and accurate inventory records.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for parts, repairs, and outside services when necessary.
  • Monitor equipment condition and identify recurring maintenance or repair issues.
  • Document and report equipment damage so costs can be properly assigned to the appropriate project/job.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance, repair, inspection, and equipment service records.
  • Help control shop expenses by monitoring labor, parts, repairs, and outside service costs.
  • Ensure the shop, yard, tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Ensure mechanics and shop employees follow company safety procedures and established maintenance practices.
  • Support emergency equipment repairs and field service needs as required.
  • Coordinate equipment availability with Operations to support project schedules and minimize disruption to field crews.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support fleet, equipment, and company operations.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in heavy equipment, fleet, diesel maintenance, construction equipment, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or shop management experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with heavy civil construction equipment, trucks, trailers, and diesel-powered equipment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance programs, equipment inspections, and repair scheduling.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and construction equipment maintenance preferred.
  • Experience managing parts and maintenance inventory.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple repair and maintenance requests in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with Mechanics, Drivers, Superintendents, Project Teams, vendors, and management.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to maintain electronic maintenance and equipment records.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.

Preferred Experience
  • Heavy civil, highway, roadway, or infrastructure construction experience.
  • Experience managing a fleet of heavy construction equipment and commercial vehicles.
  • Knowledge of DOT vehicle and equipment inspection requirements.
  • Experience with fleet/equipment management or maintenance tracking systems.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance scheduling and equipment cost tracking.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in shop, yard, and field environments.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, climb, and inspect vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work around moving equipment, diesel engines, tools, oils, fluids, and other typical shop conditions.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to respond to operational or equipment needs outside normal business hours when necessary.

Work Environment
This position works primarily in an active heavy-equipment shop and yard environment and may require visits to construction jobsites. The Shop Manager must be comfortable working around heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, mechanics, and active construction operations.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader who can keep equipment moving, mechanics productive, maintenance organized, and field operations supported
Compensation: $80,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
