What does a shipyard planning engineer do?

A Shipyard Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and monitoring work schedules, resources, and processes involved in ship construction, repair, or maintenance projects. They ensure that all activities are planned efficiently to meet deadlines, budgets, and quality standards. Their role involves close coordination with different departments, resource allocation, and troubleshooting project delays or issues. Effective planning by these engineers helps optimize shipyard operations and contributes to the successful delivery of maritime projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shipyard planning engineer?

To thrive as a Shipyard Planning Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and shipbuilding processes, typically supported by a degree in marine, mechanical, or industrial engineering. Proficiency with scheduling software (such as Primavera P6 or MS Project), AutoCAD, and familiarity with ERP systems is often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating with diverse teams and managing complex timelines. These competencies ensure efficient project execution, budget adherence, and the timely delivery of vessels in a highly regulated and deadline-driven environment.
