What is the difference between Ship Design Remote vs Naval Architect?

AspectShip Design RemoteNaval Architect
CredentialsBachelor's in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture, certifications optionalBachelor's or Master's in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering, professional licenses preferred
Work EnvironmentRemote, often freelance or contract-basedOffice or on-site at shipyards or design firms, sometimes remote
Industry UsageDesigning ships remotely, collaborating with teams worldwideOverseeing ship design, structural analysis, and safety compliance

Ship Design Remote involves creating ship designs from a remote location, often with flexible hours, while Naval Architects typically work on-site or in offices, focusing on detailed design and safety standards. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ mainly in work setting and scope of responsibilities.

How does working remotely as a ship designer impact collaboration with naval architects and engineering teams?

Remote ship designers typically collaborate with naval architects and multidisciplinary engineering teams using digital tools such as CAD software, project management platforms, and video conferencing. While physical model reviews or shipyard visits may be less frequent, regular virtual meetings and document sharing ensure effective communication and project alignment. Staying proactive in communication and being comfortable with collaborative technology are key to overcoming challenges such as time zone differences or limited in-person interactions. This setup allows for flexibility while maintaining high standards in design and project coordination.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ship design engineer working remotely?

To thrive as a remote Ship Design Engineer, you need a solid background in naval architecture or marine engineering, often requiring a relevant degree and experience with ship design principles. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD, Rhino, or ShipConstructor) and familiarity with regulatory standards like IMO and classification societies are essential. Strong communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with distributed teams and manage projects independently. These skills and qualifications are critical to ensuring high-quality, compliant designs and seamless teamwork despite the remote work environment.

What is ship design remote work?

Ship design remote work refers to the process of designing ships and marine vessels using digital tools and software from a location outside of a traditional office or shipyard. Professionals in this field use computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation software to create, modify, and analyze ship structures, systems, and layouts. Remote ship designers often collaborate with engineering teams and clients through online platforms, ensuring that all specifications and safety standards are met. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication, as much of the work is done virtually.

Job description

About the Role
We're hiring a developer with deep, hands-on experience building with MCP and ChatGPT Apps. This is not a general AI role. You should already be comfortable working inside these ecosystems, even if that experience comes from building, testing, or experimenting with your own projects. This is a remote or in-person role (Austin, TX).
You'll be responsible for creating production-grade AI applications, iterating quickly, and pushing the boundaries of what MCP and ChatGPT Apps can do.
What You'll Do
  • Build, deploy, and maintain MCP-based applications
  • Develop and optimize ChatGPT Apps using tools, structured outputs, and workflows
  • Design AI-native product experiences from the ground up
  • Rapidly prototype and test new ideas using MCP and ChatGPT environments
  • Use Claude Code as part of your development workflow
  • Improve performance, reliability, and usability of AI-driven features
  • Collaborate on product direction and technical architecture
What We're Looking For
  • Someone who has already spent serious time inside MCP + ChatGPT App environments
  • Builders who experiment, ship quickly, and learn by doing
  • Developers who understand both the technical and product side of AI apps
  • People who can operate with high ownership and minimal oversight

Requirements
  • Extensive experience working with MCP Apps and ChatGPT Apps
    • This can include production work, side projects, or heavy experimentation
    • You should not be learning these for the first time in this role
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript (React) or TypeScript (Node.js preferred)
  • Experience integrating and working with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Claude Code and how to use it effectively in development workflows
  • Experience building and shipping full-stack applications
  • Strong understanding of prompt design, tool usage, and AI interaction patterns

Benefits
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Free Food & Snacks
  • Wellness Resources
  • Stock Option Plan
