What is a ship chief engineer?

Ship Chief Engineers are the senior-most engineers on a vessel, responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical systems on board. They manage the engineering department, ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and supervise the engine room crew. Chief Engineers are vital for the safe and efficient running of a ship, often collaborating closely with the Captain and other officers. Their duties include troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining equipment, and ensuring that all machinery runs smoothly during voyages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ship chief engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ship Chief Engineer, you need a deep understanding of marine engineering, mechanical systems, and regulatory compliance, supported by a degree in marine engineering and a Chief Engineer's license (STCW certification). Proficiency with shipboard machinery, maintenance management systems, and diagnostic tools is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating engine room teams and responding to emergencies. These skills ensure the safe, efficient operation of the vessel, compliance with maritime regulations, and the wellbeing of crew and cargo.

What are some common challenges faced by a ship chief engineer, and how can they be addressed?

As a Ship Chief Engineer, you'll often encounter challenges such as managing a diverse engineering team, ensuring compliance with international maritime regulations, and maintaining complex machinery under tight schedules. To address these, it's important to foster clear communication within your team, stay updated on regulatory changes, and implement regular preventive maintenance routines. Developing strong problem-solving skills and adaptability also helps in handling unexpected technical issues during voyages.

Account Leader

Blank Metal Inc

Minneapolis, MN • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 8 days ago

Job description

THE ROLE
A meaningful part of Blank Metal's growth comes from the clients who already shipped production AI with us and want to do more. The Account Leader owns that opportunity: turning a first engagement into a long-term, expanding partnership.
You'll own a book of existing accounts and grow it. That means staying close to the work our teams ship, spotting where AI can solve the client's next problem, and building the trust that turns one project into the next three. You're the person clients call when something's working and they want more of it, and the person who sees what's possible before they ask.
This is a hands-on role for someone who can sit with an engineer one hour and a CFO the next, and who measures success in production systems and expansion revenue, not meetings booked. You'll build the AI-native account workflows that let a lean team manage deep relationships at scale.
WHAT YOU GET TO DO
Account Growth & Expansion
• Own a portfolio of existing client accounts and a quota for expansion revenue: identify, scope, and close follow-on engagements that deepen each relationship.
• Map every account: know who holds budget, what's running in production, and where the next AI opportunity is before the client raises it.
• Track relationships, expansion pipeline, and account health in HubSpot and Notion, and run a disciplined cadence of check-ins, business reviews, and renewal conversations.
Client Engagement & Storytelling
• Sit close to delivery: understand what each team is building, translate it into outcomes the client's leadership cares about, and turn shipped work into the case for what's next.
• Present Blank Metal's work in a consultative way, through business reviews, proposals, and conversations that connect production results to the next investment.
• Partner with delivery teams to scope follow-on work realistically, and with marketing to turn client wins into stories that drive the next ones.
AI-Native Account Operations
• Conceive and ship AI agents that automate account workflows: expansion-signal detection, account health scoring, renewal tracking, and client communications.
• Own your numbers: expansion revenue, net revenue retention and account health, and build the tooling that makes them visible in real time.
• We're a startup, so you'll build this function, not inherit it. Some weeks that means closing a six-figure expansion; some weeks it means wiring up the automation that tracks it. Both matter.
WHAT WILL HELP YOU SUCCEED
• 5+ years in account management, expansion sales, or consultative selling, with a track record growing existing accounts in professional services, AI, or technology.
• Proven ability to grow a book of business: you've turned first engagements into multi-year relationships and can point to the expansion revenue to prove it.
• A strong communicator who can navigate a technical conversation with engineers and a strategic one with C-level executives, often in the same day.
• Fluent in BD tools and AI-enabled workflows. Be prepared to show us agents or automations you've built.
• Self-directed and entrepreneurial: you build structure where there isn't any, and you'd rather own a number than manage a process.
• Data-driven: comfortable tracking retention, expansion, and account health, and honest about what the numbers say.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT HERE
• Build AI that ships: every project ends in a live deployment, not a slide deck.
• Craft meets velocity: we obsess over quality while delivering at startup speed.
• Outcome-driven model: our work aligns with client success, not billable hours.
• AI-native culture: you'll work with peers who deeply understand modern AI's potential and limits.
• Real collaboration: open conversations, shared ownership, and space to bring your voice.
