Job Description:

What's the role

Shell is seeking a Term Power Trader - West to join its team in San Diego, California.

This is a front-line trading role with direct accountability for PnL and risk within Shell's Western U.S. power portfolio. The position sits at the center of an integrated gas, power, and renewable trading system, where you will deploy capital across both liquid markets and structured exposures in WECC.

The role provides significant autonomy in trade execution and portfolio construction, supported by deep market insights and strong cross-desk collaboration to shape and implement high-conviction strategies. The successful candidate will be instrumental in enhancing trading performance while contributing to the ongoing development of the desk's commercial strategy.

Accountabilities:

  • Own PnL and risk deployment across WECC power and gas markets, operating within defined VaR and position limits

  • Develop and execute discretionary and structured trading strategies, leveraging both liquid markets and asset-backed optionality

  • Actively manage portfolio exposures across generation, transmission, and fuel positions to optimize risk-adjusted returns

  • Partner with fundamentals, operations, and origination teams to identify trade opportunities and enhance portfolio construction

  • Articulate market views, positions, and PnL drivers clearly to leadership and contribute to desk-level strategy development

  • Ensure robust risk management and compliance, including curve marking, position monitoring, and adherence to all regulatory and internal standards

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of working experience in trading environment

  • Proven track record of PnL generation

  • Deep understanding of Western U.S. power markets, including nodal dynamics, transmission, and fuel linkages

  • Experience managing risk and positions across both physical and financial portfolios

  • Strong grasp of market fundamentals, including supply/demand drivers, renewables, and hydro conditions

  • Ability to clearly articulate positions, risk, and PnL drivers to peers and leadership

  • Demonstrated commercial judgment and risk discipline within defined limits and compliance frameworks

  • Experience trading structured products and optionality (e.g., options, asset-backed strategies)

  • Expertise in integrated power + gas portfolio optimization

  • Familiarity with renewable generation and intermittency-driven market dynamics

  • Quantitative / analytical edge, including use of data, modeling, or programming (e.g., Python)

  • Track record of contributing to desk strategy or portfolio construction decisions

  • Ability to operate across multiple regions or products and support broader desk coverage

What we offer

The base salary range for this position is $160,000 - $240,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
