What is sheet metal layout?

Sheet metal layout is the process of planning and marking the dimensions and patterns on flat sheet metal before cutting, bending, or assembling it into a finished product. This task is crucial in industries like HVAC, construction, and manufacturing, as it ensures parts fit correctly and efficiently. Skilled workers use tools such as rulers, compasses, and scribers to accurately transfer measurements from blueprints or templates onto the metal. Proper sheet metal layout helps minimize material waste and maintain high-quality standards in the final product.

Sheet Metal Installer
Position Overview
As a Sheet Metal Installer (Levels I-III), you'll play a key role in fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing sheet metal ductwork and HVAC components for commercial projects, progressing from entry-level assistance to master-level expertise in dry-side systems. Work on diverse, hands-on installations-from basic layout and support tasks to complex startups, crew leadership, and project planning-collaborating with teams, foremen, and other trades to deliver precise, code-compliant systems that power safer, more efficient, and sustainable facilities nationwide. Our people-first culture invests in your growth at every level with structured training, mentorship, apprenticeships, certifications, and clear advancement paths, ensuring you build a rewarding career while contributing to reliable indoor environments for communities to thrive.
Duties and Responsibilities Duties vary by level, with increasing independence, complexity, leadership, and responsibility:
  • Level I (Entry-Level): Assist experienced installers with basic fabrication, assembly, layout, cutting, bending, and sealing of ductwork under direct supervision; perform general site cleanup, material handling/loading/unloading, tool organization, and support tasks; participate in safety briefings and learn dry-side HVAC basics through on-the-job training.
  • Level II (Mid-Level): Independently handle standard fabrication, installation, and repairs of sheet metal ductwork, fittings, and accessories per blueprints and SMACNA standards; perform quality checks, minor troubleshooting, duct sealing/hanging, and documentation; mentor Level I installers and coordinate with trades as needed.
  • Level III (Senior-Level): Lead advanced installations, modifications, and repairs of complex sheet metal systems; conduct equipment startups, functional testing, system balancing, and final checkouts; troubleshoot complex issues with minimal supervision; provide coaching/mentoring to Levels I-II and act as lead on sections of projects.

All levels: Enforce and uphold strict safety protocols (daily hazard assessments, toolbox talks, PPE usage); document work, progress, and incidents accurately; actively pursue personal/professional growth in sheet metal and dry-side HVAC practices.
Supervisory Responsibilities Varies by level:
  • Level I & II: None (individual contributor; may offer informal guidance to lower levels).
  • Level III: Provides coaching and mentoring to Levels I-II; may act as first-level lead on jobsite sections.

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience (varies by level):
    • Level I: 0-3 years in construction/labor or related field; no prior HVAC/sheet metal experience required-strong mechanical aptitude and eagerness to learn essential.
    • Level II: 3-5 years in commercial sheet metal/HVAC installation/fabrication; demonstrated in-depth knowledge of dry-side applications.
    • Level III: 5+ years with mastery-level knowledge; proven ability to handle complex tasks independently.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship, or relevant certifications preferred (e.g., SMACNA-related, journeyman license for higher levels).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift/carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use hand/power tools for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, varying weather, active sites); exposure to noise, dust, heights, sharp materials, mechanical hazards; must adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required PPE (hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, steel-toed boots) at all times-safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required.

Required Skills (Progressive by level)
  • Level I: Basic tool operation, material handling, site cleanup, safety awareness, ability to follow instructions.
  • Level II: Proficient sheet metal tools/layout, blueprint reading basics, duct sealing/balancing, teamwork/communication.
  • Level III: Advanced fabrication/installation, SMACNA mastery, startup/testing/troubleshooting, leadership/mentoring, OSHA 30-hour preferred.
