Emergency Services at Duke Regional Hospital is a 89-bed department caring primarily for patients experiencing ischemic strokes, non-specific chest pains, acute dyspnea, and other acute diagnoses. Emergency Services is comprised of three units: the Emergency Department, Behavioral Health Emergency Department, and Clinical Decision Unit. Job Summary:
As a Clinical Nurse (RN/Registred Nurse) with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere. The Clinical Nurse (RN/Registered Nurse) is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities. Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department. Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Work Hours & Shifts:

  • Full Time:3 - 12 hour shifts
  • Orientation: Follows a structed approach, with three phases to allow New Grad RNs to build and achieve required Emergency Department skills
  • Shifts: As a New Grad RN/Registered Nurse, you will have 12-14 weeks of orientation. During orientation, you will work all different shifts before you are assigned your preferred shift (examples of what might be available: (7a-7p; 11a-11p; 1p-1a; 3p-3a; 7p-7a)
  • Interviews: 20-30 minute virtual interviews will schedule with the leadership team
  • Shadowing: Available for up to 1 hour after an interview
  • Start date:July 27, 2026(Cohort - only start date available)

Nurse Residency Program: Every new graduate nurse who joins us is automatically enrolled in the 12-month paid program that mixes both foundational and specialty education in 13 tracks. With guidance from dedicated nurse educators, participants gain hands-on training and didactic instruction that strengthens clinical skills, reinforces decision-making, and promotes confidence at the bedside all while forming lasting professional relationships.

  • All New Graduate RN/Clinical Nurse I's will be enrolled in and must complete the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire.
  • New Graduate RN/Clinical Nurse I's are required to meet criteria set forth by the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 18 months of hire to be promoted to CNII.


Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within seven years of their start date

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Preferred:

  • Preceptorship in a ED or clinical hours in an ED .
  • EMT or Paramedic experience

Licensure, Certification or Registration:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.
  • Professional specialty certification preferred.
