Overview
It is the responsibility of the Biologist to be aware of all aspects of the Life Sciences Department. This includes maintaining all department protocols, adhering to policies, and fulfilling daily responsibilities concerning the care and maintenance of the animal collection. This position must also exhibit a high level of professional and personalized guest service that embodies the Company's brand standard and core values (K.E.E.P. - Kindness, Engagement, Empathy and Positivity).
Golden Nugget is a hotel/casino located in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, which has a 200,000-gallon shark tank, a 75,000-gallon artificial reef aquarium and a 17,000-gallon holding exhibit. The Golden Nugget is part of Landry's Restaurants, which incorporate 4 other main aquariums throughout the country. The facility is American Humane Conservation certified and participates in ongoing conservation programs with a focus on daily animal welfare. We are home to over 80 different species from all over the world.
Responsibilities
Professional Animal Care
  • Perform daily routine as scheduled.
  • Maintain accurate and informative daily animal records in ZIMS Species 360.
  • Prepare daily diet and nutritional needs for the animal collection.
  • Perform daily water quality testing of all exhibits using a HACH DR6000.
  • Perform minor Life Support System maintenance as needed.
  • Assist Director and Curatorial staff with medical treatments and husbandry procedures as needed.

Communication
  • Conduct yourself in helpful and respectful manner with all guest interactions.
  • Participate in various public presentations, with or without animals.
  • Communicate any animal related or other concerns to Curator / Life Sciences Manager.
  • Interact with dignitaries, professionals, special guests, VIPs, or tours as directed.

Department Management
  • Observe and help maintain department areas (and those not normally your responsibility) as directed.
  • Report supply needs to Director and or Curatorial staff.
  • Assure exhibit "readiness" for opening daily.
  • Make frequent daily rounds to evaluate cleanliness of work area/ equipment and safety concerns.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the duties and responsibilities they have been trained on. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Ability to SCUBA dive daily and complete a diving assessment on site once hired.
  • Ability to be medically cleared by a physician for SCUBA before hire.
  • Ability to work in a high paced structured environment.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, administrative, multi-tasking, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written), fluent English and articulate.
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and consistently producing quality results.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology (or related field) preferred.
  • Prefer a minimum of 1-2 years of experience working in a public aquarium with teleost and/or elasmobranch species. Pay rate to be determined by experience level.
  • Must be SCUBA certified with a minimum of 20 logged hours of dive time. (Advanced certifications preferred.)
  • Must be certified in CPR, 1st Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen Administration (or acquire certification within 2 weeks of hire date).
