What is a Shadowing Physical Therapy job?

A Shadowing Physical Therapy job involves observing a licensed physical therapist in a clinical setting to gain insight into the profession. It allows individuals, often students or those considering a career in physical therapy, to learn about patient care, treatment techniques, and daily responsibilities. Shadowing does not typically involve hands-on patient care but provides valuable exposure to the field. This experience can be useful for meeting application requirements for physical therapy programs.

What can I expect from a typical day while shadowing a physical therapist?

While shadowing a physical therapist, you can expect to observe patient evaluations, treatment sessions, and documentation processes in a variety of settings such as clinics, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers. Your primary role will be to watch and learn from the licensed therapist, taking careful notes and asking questions at appropriate times. You may assist with basic non-clinical tasks, but hands-on patient care is generally restricted to licensed professionals. This experience allows you to gain valuable insight into the daily responsibilities of physical therapists, the types of conditions they treat, and the collaborative nature of healthcare teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Shadowing Physical Therapy position, and why are they important?

To thrive while shadowing in physical therapy, you need a foundational understanding of human anatomy, a keen interest in healthcare, and typically a desire to pursue a physical therapy career. Familiarity with patient privacy protocols (such as HIPAA) and basic computer skills for documentation may be beneficial. Excellent observation skills, professionalism, and strong communication are important soft skills in this role. These qualities enable you to learn effectively, maintain patient trust, and collaborate well with practicing therapists and healthcare teams.

Job description

Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) – Home Health | Lakewood, NJ | Full-Time | $35–$55/Visit

Are you a licensed PTA ready to leave behind the double-booking, productivity quotas, and clinic burnout? Stern at Home Therapy is hiring a full-time Physical Therapist Assistant to deliver one-on-one care in patients' homes across Lakewood and Ocean County, NJ.
About Stern at Home Therapy:
We're a home therapy practice built around a simple belief: clinicians do their best work when they have real autonomy. Our PTAs set their own schedules, treat one patient at a time, and have a dedicated admin team behind them handling the logistics. We've built this role to fit your life — not the other way around.
What the Job Looks Like:
You'll implement individualized care plans and treat a primarily geriatric population in their homes across Lakewood, Toms River, Brick, and surrounding Ocean County communities, working closely with supervising PTs. A dedicated admin team manages scheduling, documentation support, and coordination — you focus on the patient in front of you. Shadowing is available if you're newer to home health or just want to see the model before committing.
Our Stern Scheduling Assurance Plan backs up our promise to keep your caseload full: if we can't fill your schedule and can't replace a cancellation, you get paid for up to 2 cancellations per month.
Why PTAs Choose This Role:
  • $35–$55 per visit, tiered — earn more as you take on more visits.
  • Salary option available.
  • Set your own schedule and availability.
  • One patient at a time — no double-booking, ever.
  • Fast onboarding — most clinicians start within 2 weeks.
  • Cancellation protection pay (up to 2/month).
  • Dedicated admin team handles the rest.
  • Shadowing available.

Benefits:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • PTO and paid holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Student loan repayment program.
  • CEU support.
  • Commuter support package.
  • Quarterly wellness stipend.
  • Childcare assistance.

What We're Looking For:
  • Active PTA license in New Jersey (required).
  • Reliable transportation (required).
  • Minimum 1 year of U.S. clinical experience (preferred).
  • CPR certification (preferred).
  • Home health experience preferred — not required.
  • Strong communication and bedside manner.

How to Apply:
Reach out directly — quick intro call with Yale, and most clinicians are seeing patients within two weeks.

About Stern At Home Therapy:

Our mission is to provide superlative levels of patient therapy in the comfort of home. To support our mission, we emphasize on the compatibility of the very best in patient care, staff potential and partner value. Our patients: The antidote to ordinary therapy, our strategy focuses on improved performance and comfort throughout each custom therapy regimen. Our therapists: The very leaders of our vision, we place great emphasis on encouragement and comprehensive resources to influence the progress that our therapists provide. Our partners: The strategic enforcement of our practices ensure that every partner, medical associate and department is met with financial acuity and dependability of resources, revenue and commitment. PATIENT INITIATIVE: THEN AND NOWStern at Home Therapy originates from a larger agenda than its focused priorities of today. During its infancy, the founders at Stern created comprehensive outpatient services for seniors. One of the very early believers of personal care programs, Stern truly listened to his patients and their families. More than a service provider, he became a family name. A widespread challenge for patients was the commute and scheduling of ambulatory services to get to appointments. When inquiring about patient distress, the team at Stern made note of every concern and difficulty. They realized that more patients were negligent in their care because it was too difficult for them to come to the facility. So Stern came home and continues to do so for many years, and counting. While Stern at Home Therapy has become a treasure trove of white gloved care, the entire spectrum of geriatric health remains available for our patients to this very day. Although our mission is completely focused and driven by the reversal of obligation and convenience of care, our patients know we are always about helping with the bigger picture.
