HVAC Technician - Refrigerant Systems & Controls - JLL
What this job involves: As an HVAC Technician - Refrigerant Systems & Controls at JLL, you will play a critical role in maintaining and optimizing refrigerant-based HVAC systems that support the performance, reliability, and energy efficiency of our clients' facilities. This position focuses on hands-on service, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of cooling equipment and associated building automation systems to ensure safe, compliant, and uninterrupted operations. Your technical expertise will directly contribute to system uptime, occupant comfort, and operational excellence across managed properties.
What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Diagnose, service, and repair refrigerant-based HVAC equipment including VRF/VRV systems, chillers, DX units, heat pumps, and rooftop units (RTUs).
  • Perform refrigerant recovery, charging, leak detection, brazing, and compressor repairs in compliance with EPA and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC electrical components, low-voltage controls, sensors, and automation devices.
  • Monitor, adjust, and verify HVAC system performance using superheat/subcooling analysis and other diagnostic methods.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and document findings, repairs, and refrigerant usage.
  • Support system startups, commissioning activities, and functional testing for new or upgraded equipment.
  • Communicate technical issues and recommended solutions to facility teams and management.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification (Type II or Universal).
  • TDLR Class B HVAC license (Must have)
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience servicing refrigerant-based HVAC systems.
  • Proven experience troubleshooting compressors, refrigerant circuits, and mechanical components.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC electrical systems, low-voltage controls, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical or vocational training in HVAC or a related field.
  • Experience working with building automation systems (BAS/BMS) such as Johnson Controls, Trane, Siemens, Honeywell, or Schneider.
  • Familiarity with system performance testing, energy efficiency optimization, and automation setpoint adjustments.
  • Additional certifications such as NATE, HVAC Excellence, or OEM-specific training.
  • Experience supporting HVAC startups, commissioning, or retrofit projects.
  • Strong documentation skills and comfort using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Location: Houston, TX
Work Shift: 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday.
