What is a set carpenter?

Set carpenters are skilled professionals who build, install, and dismantle scenery and props for theater productions, television shows, movies, and other live events. They work closely with set designers and other production staff to ensure the sets are safe, functional, and visually accurate according to the artistic vision. Set carpenters use a variety of materials such as wood, metal, and plastics, and operate power tools and other equipment to construct set pieces efficiently and to specification.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a set carpenter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Set Carpenter, you need strong carpentry skills, an understanding of set construction techniques, and often a background in theater production or related technical fields. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and sometimes CAD software or scenic construction plans is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure that sets are built safely, efficiently, and to the creative specifications needed for successful productions.

What are some common challenges set carpenters face when working on fast-paced productions?

Set Carpenters often work under tight deadlines, especially during the lead-up to filming or live events. One common challenge is adapting quickly to last-minute design changes or unexpected issues with materials and space. Effective communication with designers, other trades, and production managers is essential to ensure safety and maintain quality standards. Being able to problem-solve on the fly and collaborate well with a diverse team can make a significant difference in meeting project goals.

How to become a set carpenter?

To become a set carpenter, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by gaining experience through apprenticeships or entry-level positions in carpentry or theater production. Skills in reading blueprints, using hand and power tools, and knowledge of safety procedures are essential; some may pursue technical training or certifications in carpentry or stagecraft. Experience working on construction sites or in theatrical environments can improve job prospects in this field.

About This Role
Join our crew as a Carpenter I in Monroe, LA - a hands-on, per-diem role paying $21-$41/hr. You'll build and repair wood and wallboard fixtures, set up trailers and temporary structures, assist with concrete and rough carpentry, and work to local building codes every day. This job is physical and practical: read blueprints, set forms, erect prefabricated materials, help shoot grades and elevations, and support journeymen and foremen on site. Bilingual English/Spanish skills and basic forming/rebar experience are a plus. Per diem pay helps offset travel for out-of-area work.
What You'll Do
  • Set up trailers, tool trailers/conex's, erosion-control setups (silt fences, straw bales) and prepare site per plan
  • Read blueprints, sketches, and building plans to measure, mark, and determine material needs
  • Build decks, stairs, roofs and other temporary structures; install shelves, doors, frames, hardware, and finish carpentry as directed
  • Hand-set concrete forms, assemble gang forms, unload/handle/stockpile and erect prefabricated materials; assist with concrete placement and pouring
  • Assist journeyman and foreman with shooting grades, elevations and site layout; perform general site clean-up and maintain tools/equipment
  • Perform drywall hanging, finishing (taping, mudding, sanding), insulation, and other rough and finish carpentry tasks as assigned

What We're Looking For
  • Hands-on carpentry experience: wood framing, finish carpentry, exterior cladding, and interior partitions
  • Concrete and formwork experience: hand-set walls, footings, gang forms, concrete placement/pouring, and basic rebar tying
  • Drywall skills: hanging, fastening, taping, mudding, sanding, and repair
  • Blueprint reading and measuring: site layout, leveling, alignment, and use of basic layout tools
  • Comfortable with scaffolding systems, power and hand tools, lifting materials and working outdoors in all weather
  • Able to follow safety rules, work with a crew, take direction from foremen/journeymen, and handle per-diem travel assignments

Qualifications
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish required
  • OSHA 10-hour (preferred) or equivalent safety training
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation; ability to travel for per-diem assignments
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
  • Prior experience with stayform/forming and rebar tying strongly preferred
  • Minimum 1 year construction/carpentry experience (concrete/formwork experience preferred)

What We Offer
  • Pay range $21-$41/hr depending on experience
  • Per diem for eligible travel assignments
  • Overtime opportunities on many projects
  • Steady, hands-on construction work with clear day-to-day duties
  • Basic PPE and safety equipment provided
  • Opportunities to learn forming, rebar tying, concrete and finish carpentry on the job
