What is a service manager?

Service manager is a broad title given to positions throughout a wide variety of industries. As it is an umbrella term, responsibilities vary significantly from job to job. However, in all service manager positions, your duties revolve around ensuring that the services your company offers are running smoothly. This means coordinating with a team of service workers to ensure that their work meets the standards set by the company and the industry. In industries like healthcare, this may require more than basic customer service, as your team must also meet government regulations. Management positions may require overtime, especially in shift work industries, as you are responsible for the performance of the entire department, not just a particular shift. Necessary skills and qualifications vary by job. However, all service managers must be organized, able to delegate when needed, and have excellent communication skills.

What does a service manager do?

A Service Manager oversees the delivery of customer service within an organization, ensuring that client needs are met efficiently and effectively. They manage service teams, coordinate maintenance or repair schedules, handle customer inquiries or complaints, and work to improve overall service quality. Service Managers also analyze service processes, implement improvements, and ensure compliance with company policies and standards. Their goal is to enhance customer satisfaction and support the business’s operational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Service Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and experience in operations management, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems, service management software, and process improvement methodologies like Six Sigma is often required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help you effectively lead teams and resolve client issues. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service delivery, and achieving operational goals.

How does a service manager typically collaborate with other departments to improve customer satisfaction?

Service Managers work closely with departments such as sales, operations, and technical support to ensure a seamless customer experience. They often coordinate with sales teams to understand customer expectations, communicate with technical staff to resolve complex service issues, and provide feedback to product teams for service improvements. Regular interdepartmental meetings and transparent communication are key to identifying and addressing customer pain points, ultimately enhancing overall satisfaction.

What is the difference between Service Manager vs Customer Service Supervisor?

Job description

At Burwell Material Handling, people come first. Our team, our customers, and the communities we serve are the reason we exist. We're who we are today because of the people behind us. Every team member, every connection, and every customer relationship helped shape this company.

We've built our reputation by delivering smarter, safer material handling across the full lifecycle: equipment sales, rentals, service and parts, fleet telematics, and engineered automation solutions. We do it with the kind of personal attention that comes from being neither too big to care nor too small to keep up. We listen first, we move fast, and we keep our word.

Now we're growing, and we're looking for forward-thinking, motivated teammates who want to help build something meaningful. Here, your contributions count and your voice is heard.

About the Service Manager Role:

We are hiring a Service Manager based in Chesapeake, Virgina who takes pride in building and maintaining a safe, high-performing team. You’ll lead experienced techs, train new ones, and foster a culture built on trust, hard work, and pride in doing things the right way—with safety always at the forefront. The Service Manager oversees service performance, repeat business, and team coordination, all backed by a crew that takes pride in their work. If you're driven, team-focused, and serious about doing great work, we want to hear from you!

What You’ll Do as a Service Manager:

  • Oversee all aspects of the Service Department, prioritizing high-quality service and customer satisfaction
  • Drive profitable growth of service labor while managing department expenses
  • Create and manage annual department goals, budget, and marketing plans
  • Lead and implement service process improvements across the team
  • Handle escalated concerns from customers or team members professionally and promptly
  • Support technicians with diagnostics and ensure technical accuracy
  • Build, train, and retain a strong team through development plans and mentorship
  • Enforce safety regulations and maintain a safe working environment
  • Collaborate with regional and corporate leadership on performance and strategy
  • Willingness to travel to support other branches

Skills & Experience We’re Looking For:

  • 3–5 years of management experience in machinery or a related service industry (material handling preferred)
  • Strong leadership and team development experience
  • Proven ability to grow service revenue and improve customer satisfaction
  • Technical knowledge and experience assisting with equipment diagnostics
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills
  • Ability to analyze reports and drive continuous improvement
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable DMV record
  • Ability to perform and support the physical demands of service operations

Benefits:
All offers are contingent on passing a pre-employment drug test and background check. Burwell Material Handling is a drug-free workplace.

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Excellent benefits – Medical, Dental, Vision, Accident, Short-Term Disability, Life Insurance, and 401K with Company Match
  • Progressive Paid Time Off and Holidays – starting with 3 weeks PTO in your first year
  • Paid parental leave for moms and dads
  • Opportunities for growth and internal promotion
  • Annual Community Impact Day – paid volunteer time in the places we work and live

Our goal is to improve the quality of work life by using fair and consistent treatment and providing equal growth opportunities for all team members. We are an equal opportunity employer as defined by federal, state or local laws.

If you're looking to build a meaningful career, we’re excited to support your goals and help you grow with us.
