What is a service manager?

Service manager is a broad title given to positions throughout a wide variety of industries. As it is an umbrella term, responsibilities vary significantly from job to job. However, in all service manager positions, your duties revolve around ensuring that the services your company offers are running smoothly. This means coordinating with a team of service workers to ensure that their work meets the standards set by the company and the industry. In industries like healthcare, this may require more than basic customer service, as your team must also meet government regulations. Management positions may require overtime, especially in shift work industries, as you are responsible for the performance of the entire department, not just a particular shift. Necessary skills and qualifications vary by job. However, all service managers must be organized, able to delegate when needed, and have excellent communication skills.

What does a service manager do?

A Service Manager oversees the delivery of customer service within an organization, ensuring that client needs are met efficiently and effectively. They manage service teams, coordinate maintenance or repair schedules, handle customer inquiries or complaints, and work to improve overall service quality. Service Managers also analyze service processes, implement improvements, and ensure compliance with company policies and standards. Their goal is to enhance customer satisfaction and support the business’s operational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Service Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and experience in operations management, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems, service management software, and process improvement methodologies like Six Sigma is often required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help you effectively lead teams and resolve client issues. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service delivery, and achieving operational goals.

How does a service manager typically collaborate with other departments to improve customer satisfaction?

Service Managers work closely with departments such as sales, operations, and technical support to ensure a seamless customer experience. They often coordinate with sales teams to understand customer expectations, communicate with technical staff to resolve complex service issues, and provide feedback to product teams for service improvements. Regular interdepartmental meetings and transparent communication are key to identifying and addressing customer pain points, ultimately enhancing overall satisfaction.

What is the difference between Service Manager vs Customer Service Supervisor?

Job description

The Opportunity: Lead, Build, and Grow in Butte

Bretz RV and Marine is looking for a powerhouse Service Manager to spearhead our rapid expansion in Butte, Montana.

We are currently building a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, growing our local team, and aggressively scaling our customer support staff. This is not a role for someone looking to maintain the status quo or ease into the position over time. We are entering a massive growth phase, and we need a high-energy, driven leader who will step in, take ownership, make an immediate impact, and build a world-class service operation from the ground up.

You do not need RV industry experience. We can teach you our systems, our processes, and the technical side of the industry. We can even coach and develop your leadership style. What we cannot teach is your core character, your work ethic, and how you show up every day.

We are looking for someone who already possesses a proven track record, or the fierce drive to build one, in these key areas:

  • Leading People: You know how to motivate a team, build trust, and get everyone pulling in the same direction.
  • Building Teams: You have a passion for recruiting, training, and developing people to reach their full potential.
  • Driving Results: You are execution-oriented and have a history of hitting operational targets and managing high-output environments.

Who We Are

Bretz is a third-generation, family-owned Montana business. We have been serving customers since 1967 and have grown into the largest RV and marine dealership in the Pacific Northwest. Many of our strongest leaders chose to relocate to Montana because they wanted to raise a family here, enjoy the world-class outdoors, and be part of a thriving company where they could make a tangible impact.

We are a family-first business, right down to our culture. We are deeply committed to creating an environment where our people can thrive both professionally and personally.

Your Core Mission: Lead Through Transition & Growth

We are currently operating at our current Butte location while our brand-new, state-of-the-art facility is being built right next to us. We are scheduled to move into the new building in July of 2027. This means we need a leader who can operate the business today in a very hands on working capacity while planning and executing the transition into our new home.

As our Service Manager, you will be entirely responsible for the performance of the Butte service department, achieving results by pouring into the currently small team of people you lead. And as the seasons change, you will recruit, hire, train, and develop a high-output team of technicians, service advisors, dispatchers, and support staff.

Our defined leader qualities are the exact standards you will model and live by every day:

  • Integrity: We do the right thing, always.
  • Lead by Example: We model our core values, guiding others based on our actions, not just our words.
  • Decisive: We quickly and effectively make decisions.
  • Train and Develop: We intentionally improve our team, ourselves, and the company.
  • Humble, Hungry, Smart: We are the ideal team player.

The Customer Experience Standard

Our customers rely on their RVs and boats for irreplaceable time with their families. When something breaks, it affects plans, trips, and lifelong memories.

We aim for a world-class purchasing and ownership experience. To achieve this, you must be entirely customer-experience focused. You will step directly into tough situations, take ownership, and drive toward a solution. More importantly, you will train your service advisors and staff on how to communicate with radical clarity, set honest expectations upfront, and follow through every single time. Customer service here is about being responsive, clear, and accountable.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Proven Leadership: Experience managing, recruiting, and developing teams in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
  • Growth-Oriented & Aggressive: A relentless drive to improve yourself, your team, and the business's bottom line.
  • High Energy: The stamina and enthusiasm to lead a growing department through a major facility transition.
  • Strong Communicator: Ability to deliver clear expectations to your team and transparent solutions to customers.
  • Tech Savvy: Strong computer skills are a must. We utilize multiple dealership management systems, and you need to adapt to them quickly.
  • Outdoor & Family-Oriented: A passion for the outdoors and a strong alignment with our family-focused company values.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Compensation: $75,000 - $85,000 annually
  • Relocation Assistance: Available depending on candidate situation
  • Full Benefits Package: Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Financial Security: 401(k) with company match and profit sharing
  • Perks: Employee discounts, RV & Boat purchase program, Paid Time Off (PTO), and our popular RV Borrow Program (take a camper out and experience the lifestyle yourself!)
Are You Ready? This role is demanding. The expectations are high, the growth is aggressive, and the pace is real. But for the right leader, this is a career-defining opportunity to help shape a brand-new facility, build an elite team, and make a massive impact in a community where people want to live and work. If you are a high-energy leader ready to build something great in Butte, we want to talk to you.
