Job description

Vehicle Service Technician (Student Employment)

The Weld RE-5J school district is seeking a highly motivated and talented high school student to join our team as a vehicle service technician within the transportation department. This opportunity will provide valuable hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of motor vehicle service and maintenance while working in a professional environment. The candidate(s) selected would learn from our technician how to diagnose and repair issues with district vehicles (vans, buses, trucks). In addition, the candidate(s) would be encouraged to study to receive automotive service excellence (ASE) certification and become a fully certified vehicle technician. The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about vehicle maintenance and service. This position demands outstanding communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and multitasking capabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Learning to diagnose mechanical issues in various types of vehicles or machinery
  • Helping with repairs and maintenance tasks under the supervision of experienced mechanics
  • Learning to use various tools and equipment to perform repairs
  • Completing maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements
  • Always observing safety procedures and guidelines to prevent accidents or injuries
  • Participating in training and educational opportunities to improve skills and knowledge
  • Assisting in the ordering and organization of parts and supplies
  • Keeping the workshop clean and tidy
  • Communicating with drivers under supervision to explain repairs and maintenance work
Required Skills, Experience and Abilities
  • Basic mechanical aptitude - interest in and ability to learn how vehicle systems work (engines, brakes, transmissions, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn - ability to take direction, ask questions, and absorb new information about vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Attention to detail - ability to follow instructions carefully to ensure proper vehicle servicing
  • Good work ethic & dependability - punctuality, responsibility, and a strong commitment to the job
  • Basic hand tool knowledge - familiarity with wrenches, screwdrivers, jacks, and other basic tools (training will be provided)
  • Safety awareness - understanding of basic safety rules and willingness to follow all safety procedures in the shop
  • Teamwork & communication - ability to work with experienced technicians, ask for help when needed, and communicate clearly
Education and Training

Preference for those students who have previous successful experience in the power, structures, and tech (small engines and welding) pathway or students who have earned their OSHA 10 certificates. Students should be enrolled in work-based learning during the 2025-2026 school year.

  • If material is not legally protected but is of a confidential or sensitive nature, great care shall be taken to ensure that only those with a "need to know" are allowed access to the material.
  • Staff members shall handle all employee, student, and district records in accordance with applicable district policies.
  • Staff members who intentionally disclose student records, other confidential student information and/or district information may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
