What is a sensor?

A Sensor job typically involves working with sensor technologies to collect, analyze, and interpret data for various applications. This role may include designing, developing, testing, and maintaining sensors used in industries like automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, and environmental monitoring. Responsibilities often involve programming, signal processing, calibration, and integration with other systems. Sensor professionals may work as engineers, technicians, or researchers focused on improving accuracy and reliability. The job requires knowledge of electronics, physics, and data analysis tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the sensor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sensor in an industrial or scientific setting, you need strong analytical and observational skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with data collection or quality assessment methodologies. Typically, Sensors use specialized measuring instruments, data logging software, and may require certifications relevant to safety or technical standards. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help Sensors excel, especially when relaying findings or collaborating on process improvements. These skills are vital for ensuring accurate and reliable monitoring, supporting operational efficiency, and identifying potential issues promptly.

What are some common challenges sensors face on the job?

Sensors often work in environments where maintaining accuracy and consistency under time constraints can be a challenge, especially when multiple samples need to be analyzed quickly. Adapting to new technologies, processes, or strict regulatory standards may also require ongoing training and attention. Additionally, Sensors must remain vigilant for minor anomalies, as small errors can impact overall quality or safety. However, these challenges are balanced by established procedures, team support, and opportunities to develop specialized technical expertise over time.

Job description

As the Sensor Calibration Manager, you will play a critical role in the development and reliability of our purpose-built autonomous vehicles. You will lead a specialized team responsible for ensuring the precise calibration of our core sensor suite, including lidar, radar, and camera systems for factory, service depot, and online. By developing rigorous testing protocols, system diagnostics, analyzing complex sensor data, and optimizing sensor performance across diverse environmental conditions, you will ensure our perception systems deliver the accuracy required for safe and effective autonomous operation.

Your leadership will directly impact Zoox's mission to provide the next generation of mobility-as-a-service. Operating at the intersection of robotics and advanced hardware engineering, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional groups-including vehicle engineering, field support team, operation team, and systems teams-to overcome complex integration and execution challenges.

Your team's work in maintaining robust and accurate sensor calibration is foundational to enabling our vehicles to safely navigate urban environments and bringing our fully autonomous fleet to market.

In this role, you will...
  • Build and support a factory, service depot, and online calibration system for all autonomous driving sensors, including camera, lidar, and radar

  • Build scalable and sustainable architecture and software to  meet requirements from factory production capacity, service depot maintenance, and online correction use cases

  • Work cross-functionally to shape scalable roles and responsibilities to optimize calibration efficiency and cost on both the manufacturing and service sides

  • Work on the next-gen auto-calibration system to support online sensor calibration capability

Qualifications
  • Education & Experience: BS, MS, or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, with 5+ years of industry experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Prior working experience in calibration systems from OEM or Tier one. Strong understanding of automobile sensor calibration in factory manufacturing, dealership, and online setup. Experience with sensor calibration product life-cycle development. Deep technical knowledge of intrinsic and extrinsic calibration methodologies for complex, multi-modal sensor suites, specifically encompassing cameras, lidars, and radars.
  • Leadership Track Record: Proven experience managing, mentoring, and scaling high-performing engineering teams, with a strong ability to guide technical projects from initial research and development through to testing and production deployment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong software engineering fundamentals with proficiency in C++ and Python, coupled with a solid foundation in linear algebra, 3D geometry, optimization algorithms, localization, and computer vision
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate seamlessly with hardware, perception, and systems engineering teams to resolve complex, system-level integration challenges.
Bonus Qualifications
  • PHD in AI, computer vision, or robotics

  • Prior 3+ years of working experience from a car manufacturer OEM, tier one

$242,000 - $333,000 a year
