What is a sensor materials engineer?

Sensor materials engineers are professionals who design, develop, and improve the materials used in various types of sensors. They focus on selecting and modifying materials to enhance sensor performance, reliability, and efficiency for applications in fields like electronics, automotive, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. Their work involves understanding material properties, conducting experiments, and collaborating with other engineers to integrate sensors into devices. Sensor materials engineers play a key role in advancing sensor technology by ensuring sensors are sensitive, durable, and cost-effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sensor materials engineer?

To thrive as a Sensor Materials Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, engineering principles, and sensor technology, typically supported by a degree in materials science, chemistry, or a related field. Familiarity with characterization tools (such as SEM, TEM, and XPS), sensor fabrication techniques, and relevant software for data analysis is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in multidisciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for developing innovative sensor materials with reliable performance for various applications.

What are some common challenges faced by sensor materials engineers when developing new sensor technologies?

Sensor Materials Engineers often encounter challenges such as selecting appropriate materials that balance sensitivity, durability, and compatibility with other components. They must also ensure the materials can be scaled for manufacturing while maintaining performance standards. Additionally, integrating new materials into existing sensor platforms may require close collaboration with electrical and mechanical engineers to address issues like signal interference or material degradation. Staying updated with the latest material innovations and testing methods is essential for overcoming these hurdles.

What is the difference between Sensor Materials Engineer vs Sensor Development Engineer?

AspectSensor Materials EngineerSensor Development Engineer

Job description

Vision Point Systems is seeking qualified candidates to provide on-site support to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Coatings and Corrosion branch at their remote laboratory site in Dania Beach, FL. This laboratory conducts corrosion-related testing, including flow-assisted corrosion, natural atmospheric exposure, and fully immersed exposure.

Primary duties of this position are those necessary for working in an aqueous corrosion laboratory focused on testing and evaluating the corrosion performance of base materials and coatings used by the US Navy.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Supporting the design and execution of laboratory testing programs;
  • Evaluating test specimens, analyzing collected data, and documenting the results.
  • Overseeing laboratory operations, such as inventory management, laboratory upkeep, and other related activities.
  • Test evaluations may include photographic, electrochemical, chemical, or other types of evaluations related to corrosion and coatings testing.
  • Developing technical reports and standard operating procedures will also be expected.
  • Coordinate site visitors from Gov’t, Contractor, and Non-DoD personnel who access the site during experiment operation.
  • Maintain a schedule for periodic inspection and monitoring of active experiments including: timely submission of Discharge Monitoring Reports, weekly inspections of mechanical systems, timely reporting of experiment status to personnel at West Bethesda.
  • Coordinate with local government regulators to ensure compliance with permitted wastewater discharge. Collect water samples, record discharge volumes, interpret water quality test reports, and generate discharge monitoring reports.
  • Management of site material inventory including test articles, raw materials, and incoming shipments.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in materials science, mechanical engineering or other similarly aligned engineering degree from an accredited university or college.
  • 1-3 years of past work experience, with emphasis on laboratory operations and testing.
  • Ability to work at a remote location with the ability to self-direct daily tasking.
  • Fundamentals of corrosion and electrochemistry.
  • Knowledge of HAZMAT handling.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance - requires US Citizenship.
  • Familiar with basics of electronic motor control for fluid handling systems including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), tank level switches, variable frequency drives (VFDs), pump motors, dataloggers, and various sensors and transducers.
  • Ability to perform basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting for electronic control cabinets, sensor dataloggers, electric motors and motor controllers, pumps and fluid handling equipment, and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to identify and request maintenance actions for facilities or corrosion damage.
  • Must be able to maintain a general inventory of site materials to support emergent projects.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 50% of the work would be done outdoors to set up tests and equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Full time employees with Vision Point Systems qualify for a generous benefits plan to include medical, dental, 1x your salary in life insurance, and short and long term disability. VPS also offers 401k participation and matching. Highly contributing team members are also rewarded with flexible work hours, travel, and training opportunities when available.

Equal Opportunity Employer.
