Job description

As a Senior Substation Power Equipment Engineer, you will serve as a technical expert in the specification, evaluation, and lifecycle management of high-voltage substation equipment across the transmission system. This role involves leading complex engineering initiatives, developing equipment standards, supporting procurement and field operations, and ensuring compliance with utility practices, industry codes, and regulatory requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the specification and standardization of substation power equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, and surge arresters.
  • Perform and review advanced engineering analyses for equipment ratings, fault current withstand, thermal performance, insulation coordination, and lifecycle cost.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals, review technical submittals, and oversee factory acceptance testing (FAT) to ensure compliance with utility requirements and industry standards.
  • Provide expert technical support during equipment installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting, including field visits and coordination with construction and operations teams.
  • Collaborate with procurement, asset management, and reliability teams to optimize equipment selection, performance, and maintenance strategies.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, datasheets, and technical documentation for substation equipment.
  • Lead root cause analysis of equipment failures and recommend corrective actions or design improvements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to training programs and technical development initiatives.
  • Ensures power equipment is in compliance with associated regulatory requirements (NERC, IUB, etc.)

  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes affecting substation equipment, and apply insights to improve utility practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering. Major in Electrical Engineering or relevant, equivalent experience and/or education.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of work experience in related area for Senior Engineer level
  • Power system coursework preferred for electrical engineering majors.
  • Utility experience preferred.
  • Possess sound analytical, problem-solving and documentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors and individuals inside and outside the Company.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under minimal supervision, in a team environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to learn and utilize job specific software.
