Job description

The Senior Event Technician - Sports Complex serves within the Technical Operations unit of ECS and acts as the lead technical operations representative for events hosted within the university's Sports Complex. This position plays a critical role in delivering high-quality technical production support for a wide range of events while maintaining strong partnerships with Athletics, Facilities Operations & Maintenance, and other campus stakeholders.
Reporting to the ECS Technical Operations Management, the Senior Event Technician is responsible for the planning, coordination, setup, execution, and strike of audio/visual and event-related technical systems with the Sports Complex. Events can expect to range from daily meetings and team practices to large-scale athletic competitions and major campus events such as Commencement.
This position will strive to achieve the department's standard of exceptional customer service by focusing on the four core tenets: safety, courtesy, professionalism, and efficiency. This position will work mainly in the Sports Complex, including Unitas Stadium, SECU Arena, Towson Center, and South Campus Pavilion. Though rare, occasional work in other areas across campus will be necessary, such as University Union and West Village Commons.
Responsibilities and Duties
Serve as the lead technician for Sports Complex events:
- Responsible for the proper setup, operation, troubleshooting, and breakdown of audio/visual systems in support of events.
- Exercise independent judgment in assessing event needs and determining the most effective technical solutions to ensure successful execution.
- Operates and supports a broad range of audio/visual technologies, including integrated house systems and portable lighting systems, presentation and projection equipment, laptops and computer interfaces, screens, digital displays, and professional sound reinforcement systems of varying sizes and complexity.
Serve as the primary technical liaison between Event & Conference Services (ECS) and Towson Athletics for events within the Sports Complex:
- Directs communicating event requirements, coordinating production timelines, aligning operational expectations, ensuring seamless technical execution.
- Facilitate translating event requirements into actionable production plans, anticipates challenges, and maintains alignment between ECS standards and Athletics priorities.
Oversee and manage all audio/visual and technical equipment within the Sports Complex, ensuring proper use:
- Monitors system performance, identifies risks, and coordinates repairs or upgrades.
- Perform and schedule preventative maintenance as needed.
- Maintains equipment inventory and documentation and provides input on budgeting and purchasing recommendations to support lifecycle planning and operational continuity; this includes the management, installation, and breakdown of the OpenGate weapons detection equipment used for scanning guests for events.
Supervise on-site students and contract event technicians:
- Administer training in set-up, operation and load out of technical equipment.
- Assure all safety measures are in place involving personnel and equipment.
- Assign responsibilities to employees during events to best fit their abilities. Provide feedback to department leadership concerning performance of employees.
Build and sustain strong, collaborative partnerships with stakeholders in Facilities Operations and Athletics:
- Attends regular planning and coordination meetings, participates in event walkthroughs and production advances, and communicates technical requirements.
- Coordinates scheduling, supports space readiness assessments, and collaborates on event-day logistics to ensure seamless execution.
- Serves as a reliable point of contact for resolving technical and operational issues before, during, and after events.
Evenings and weekends are required as dictated by event schedules.
Qualifications and Skills
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Multimedia Technology or related field.
- One year in the operation and maintenance of audio-visual or multimedia equipment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain University Forklift operator and DOT certification to operate university vehicles.
- Experience with collegiate athletic production.
- Experience with video production for live events.
- Experience collaborating with cross functional teams within a large organization.
Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of multimedia equipment; of basic media systems and facilities design. Skill in the operation and repair of multimedia equipment. Ability to lead and train subordinate personnel; to use personal computers; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to work over, under and around fixed equipment; to work in confined spaces; to lift and carry multimedia equipment.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Daktronics scoreboard system.
- Experience with Tricaster video systems.
- Proficiency in Adobe Suite, 25 Live, Smartsheet, Claris/Filemaker.
- Audio Visual project management skillset including planning, scheduling, tracking, and status reporting.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
