Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Mid-Level to Senior Tunnel Ventilation Engineer (Design) to support our Americas Tunnel Practice in New York, New York, supporting projects locally, nationally, and internationally.
Role/Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Consultancy in design, design optimization, and construction administration of Tunnel Ventilation and Fire Life Safety systems for transit system, rail system, and highway projects. Project facility types include bridges, tunnels, and overbuilds, including also miscellaneous industrial and utility tunnels, in locations across North America and globally.
  • Development of design criteria, manuals, technical reports, designs, calculations, drawings and specifications, heating and cooling load calculations, pressure loss calculations, and related engineering processes for such facilities, under traditional design-bid-build, design-build, and other procurement formats.
  • Development of ventilation concepts and strategies, and optimization of ventilation capacities integrating with others' performance prediction for satisfaction of tenability and fire life safety requirements using 1-D Subway Environment Simulation (SES) and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Provide support during commissioning and construction administration.
  • Assist in growing the firm's tunnel vent practice with development of pursuit strategies, technical concepts, and proposal technical approaches.
  • Help identify, attract, and assist in recruiting additional staff.
  • Mentor more junior tunnel ventilation engineers to strengthen the tunnel ventilation center of excellence and grow technical design expertise.
  • Publish technical articles in ISAVFT, ASHRAE, and other national and international venues.
  • Support technical client relationships and marketing.
  • Contribute to Risk Management Plan and Quality Plan on projects.

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • BA/BS + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and education.
  • Professional registration (PE) in at least one state, and ability and willingness to register in other states if needed.
  • 8+ years of design experience in heating ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) inclusive of heavy industrial ventilation, or mine ventilation design experience, and ancillary facilities MEP designs.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary design coordination and systems integration.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations and active participation in National societies and organizations.
  • Competency in technical report writing, preparation, and editing for issue.
  • Ability and willingness to work in NYC office with occasional travel outside NYC.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 12+ years of experience.
  • Related experience with regulatory requirements for tunnel ventilation and fire life safety, including road, rail, transit, and special underground spaces, including NFPA 130 and NFPA 502.
  • Related design experience with tunnel ventilation and underground structures.
  • Knowledge of tunnel ventilation design methods and techniques.
  • Publications in technical journals and conferences and seminars.
  • Experience in factory and field performance qualification of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Experience in heating and cooling load and energy modeling, LEED certification, production level skills in Autodesk CADD, Bently CADD, and Revit.
