What are some common challenges faced by Senior Substation Engineers during large infrastructure projects?

Senior Substation Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with evolving safety and regulatory standards. They must also address unexpected site conditions, integrate new technologies with legacy systems, and maintain clear communication across stakeholders. Proactive problem-solving and strong organizational skills are essential to navigate these complexities and deliver successful projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Substation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Substation Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, strong experience in substation design, and a relevant engineering degree—often complemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and power system analysis tools like ETAP or SKM is typically required. Excellent project management, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate complex projects and mentor junior engineers. These skills ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient design and operation of substations that are critical to power distribution networks.

What is the difference between Senior Substation Engineer vs Substation Engineer?

AspectSenior Substation EngineerSubstation Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering, PE license often preferred, relevant certificationsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering, some roles may require or prefer PE license

The main difference between a Senior Substation Engineer and a Substation Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and leadership. Senior Substation Engineers typically have more experience, hold leadership roles, and oversee complex projects, while Substation Engineers focus on technical design and implementation tasks. Both roles require similar technical credentials, but the senior position involves greater project management and decision-making responsibilities.

What are Senior Substation Engineers?

Senior Substation Engineers are experienced electrical engineers who specialize in the design, maintenance, and operation of electrical substations. They oversee projects involving the installation and upgrading of substation equipment, ensure systems meet safety and regulatory standards, and often lead teams of engineers and technicians. Their expertise helps ensure the reliable transmission and distribution of electricity in power grids. Senior Substation Engineers also troubleshoot complex issues and play a key role in planning for future energy needs.

Job description

Hunt Utility Services is a privately held company providing management and support services for Sharyland Utilities, L.L.C., a Texas-based electric transmission utility.  We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transmission and substation services, ensuring operational excellence, and investing to support the infrastructure needs of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.

Position Summary

Join our team as a Sr. Substation Engineer, where you will serve as the technical lead for substation projects, supporting execution of high-voltage infrastructure (138 kV and 345 kV).
In this role, you will define project scope, provide engineering leadership, and coordinate with the Engineer of Record (EOR), construction teams, and internal stakeholders to ensure projects are technically sound and executable. While you will not manage overall project cost and schedule, you will provide critical inputs and technical guidance that enable successful project delivery. You will work closely with the Senior Project Manager, supporting project execution from concept through construction and commissioning while helping ensure consistency, constructability, and alignment with company standards.

Responsibilities

Define and develop project scope, including major equipment, configurations, and design basis
Provide technical input to support development of project cost estimates and schedules
Coordinate with the Engineer of Record (EOR) to guide engineering design and ensure alignment with scope and company standards
Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with company standards
Support development and refinement of substation configurations, grounding and physical design, and protection and control integration in coordination with SMEs
Coordinate with the Senior Project Manager to ensure engineering deliverables align with project schedule and scope changes are identified and communicated early
Support construction execution by responding to RFIs, resolving technical issues, and coordinating with field teams and the Construction Manager
Maintain visibility into engineering progress, design risks, and constructability considerations
Lead standards review and continuous improvement, incorporating lessons learned into design practices
Support project administration activities, including WBS alignment, purchase requisition (PR) technical input, and equipment/vendor coordination
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Transmission Line Engineer, Project Controls, Construction, and P&C/technical SMEs

Required Skills

Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
Minimum 7+ years of experience in substation engineering or project execution within electric utilities or EPC firms
Demonstrated experience supporting design reviews, value engineering, and constructability assessments for substation projects
Experience supporting development of project scope, schedule, and cost inputs for small- to mid-scale substation projects, or serving as a project lead engineer
Strong understanding of high-voltage substation design, including physical layouts, equipment selection, grounding systems, and protection and control integration
Familiarity with applicable industry standards and practices such as IEEE, NESC, NEC, and ANSI
Experience coordinating and managing external consultants, including Engineer of Record (EOR) and owner's engineering teams
Strong ability to review and interpret substation one-lines, protection and control drawings, and physical layout drawings and specifications
Experience with substation physical design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar platforms
Familiarity with protection and control systems design, relay schemes, and integration with SCADA systems
Experience reviewing equipment specifications, including breakers, transformers, and major station equipment
Familiarity with utility standards, engineering governance, and design standard development
Experience supporting commissioning, energization, and turnover activities
    Experience supporting large capital projects
Familiarity with CIP or utility compliance environments
Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to support multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously
Demonstrated ability to operate with a high level of ownership, accountability, and initiative
Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional environment, collaborating across engineering, construction, and support teams
Experience working within utility environments, including coordination with environmental, permitting, operations, and stakeholder groups

Preferred Skills & Experience

    Professional Engineer (PE) license
Experience working within ERCOT or similar utility markets
Experience identifying and implementing cost and schedule optimization opportunities during design and execution
Familiarity with vendor engagement and equipment procurement processes, including technical bid evaluations
