What does a senior structural engineer do?

A Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and comply with relevant codes. They lead project teams, review calculations and drawings, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. Additionally, they collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients to deliver projects on time and within budget, while also addressing any structural issues that may arise during construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior structural engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, you need an accredited engineering degree, professional licensure (such as PE or Chartered Engineer), and deep expertise in structural analysis and design. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS, as well as knowledge of relevant building codes, is essential. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial to ensuring safe, efficient designs and effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and complex projects.

What are some common challenges faced by senior structural engineers when managing large-scale projects?

Senior Structural Engineers often face the challenge of coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring that all aspects of structural design integrate seamlessly with architectural and mechanical systems. Managing tight project timelines and adapting to evolving client requirements while maintaining compliance with safety standards is also common. Additionally, they may need to troubleshoot unexpected site conditions and communicate complex technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. These challenges require strong project management and leadership skills, as well as the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.

Job description

Position Summary:

Mevion is seeking a Senior Site Planner to lead the planning and design coordination of proton therapy system installations for hospitals and cancer treatment centers. This is a highly visible role that sits at the intersection of engineering, architecture, construction, and customer collaboration.

The Sr. Site Planner will serve as the primary technical site planning liaison between Mevion and customer architectural/engineering teams, guiding projects from early feasibility assessment through construction documentation and into construction oversight. They’ll help ensure that customer site designs align with Mevion system requirements, regulatory standards, and successful installation needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead site planning activities for Mevion proton therapy system installations, including current and future product platforms.

  • Serve as the primary technical contact for customer architects, engineers, and design teams from feasibility through final construction documentation.

  • Partner with Sales during early opportunity development to evaluate site feasibility, assess infrastructure readiness, and support layout studies.

  • Develop and review site layouts, equipment plans, and technical drawing packages to ensure alignment with Mevion system requirements.

  • Coordinate with internal engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, controls, and shielding, to integrate system requirements into customer building designs.

  • Review architectural and engineering drawings at key design milestones, including schematic design, design development, and construction documents.

  • Identify design conflicts, site risks, and compliance issues early, and work cross-functionally to resolve them before they affect installation or project execution.

  • Travel to customer sites to perform site inspections, verify alignment with design requirements, and recommend corrective actions when needed.

  • Attend design coordination meetings with customers, architects, engineers, contractors, and internal stakeholders.

  • Develop, maintain, and improve Site Planning Guides, drawing templates, installation criteria, and technical documentation standards.

  • Create tools and templates that improve the inspection and review process for technical documents and construction work.

  • Support handoff from Site Planning to Project Execution teams by ensuring design intent, constraints, and requirements are clearly documented and communicated.

  • Provide design input to new product development teams so future systems are clearly defined for site integration and installation.

  • Offer technical guidance to internal stakeholders on site-specific requirements, building constraints, and infrastructure planning.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in site planning, architectural/engineering coordination, construction design, or technical planning for complex capital equipment or infrastructure projects.

  • Experience coordinating building systems such as high-voltage electrical, HVAC, structural, and IT infrastructure within complex facilities.

  • Experience in healthcare environments, radiation oncology or medical device installation is strongly preferred.

  • Experience reviewing and producing construction documentation and working fluidly between metric and imperial units.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit.

  • Working knowledge of building codes, design coordination practices, and construction documentation processes.

  • Strong ability to translate technical engineering requirements into clear site, architectural, and infrastructure criteria.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across customers, design firms, contractors, sales, engineering, and project teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple site planning efforts simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as business needs require.

Physical and Environmental Considerations:

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.

  • Required use of standard office equipment including laptop, phone, copier, etc.

  • Typical office environment.

The hiring range represents what Mevion Medical Systems, Inc. reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will depend on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and other job-related factors.Â
