Job description

GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking a Mid-Level Geological Specialist 1 (Hydrogeologist) with proven experience in the application of environmental regulations as they apply to underground storage tank corrective action and voluntary site remediation to work out of our Homestead, PA office. Under the direct supervision of a Senior Level Geologist/Hydrogeologist, the successful candidate will oversee and complete storage tank compliance operations, site investigations, environmental due diligence assessments, environmental sampling and monitoring, site remediation, and regulatory compliance evaluations and reporting. The successful candidate may be eligible for a sign on bonus. #LI-JB1
Requirements:
  • Review and evaluate compliance for storage tank facilities, including storage tank system monitoring and oversee and complete the Corrective Action Process (CAP).
  • Perform Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), Site Characterizations, and Remedial Investigations in accordance with the most recent ASTM standards and states' voluntary remediation program regulations.
  • Plan and conduct environmental media investigations and sampling activities (soil, groundwater, surface water, etc.), oversight of soil and bedrock drilling and sampling including monitoring well design, installation and groundwater sampling, and complete waste classification and clean fill determinations, waste disposal coordination.
  • Interpretation of groundwater elevation data, soil and groundwater quality data, and design and conducting aquifer tests (slug tests and pump tests) with associated data processing and interpretation.
  • Plan and conduct soil vapor and indoor air investigations including data evaluation and modeling.
  • Prepare Remedial Action Plans, Remedial Action Progress Reports and Remedial Action Completion Reports in accordance with the Corrective Action Process.
  • Independent production of multi-media Sampling Plans/Quality Assurance Plans, Health and Safety Plans, Site Characterization Reports, Remedial Investigation Reports, and Final Reports in accordance with state voluntary remediation and brownfield programs.
  • Field investigations (e.g., monitoring and sampling) and remediation activities involving domestic travel may be required.
  • Develop technical specifications for written proposals to clients for approval by senior level professionals, and serve as project team member and participate in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors (B.S.) degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geoscience or related earth science field.
  • At least three to five years of experience in environmental consulting, including site investigation, environmental due diligence, and environmental remediation projects in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols.
  • Experience in storage tank and voluntary site remediation regulations, specifically Pa Code Chapter 245 - Administration of the Storage Tank and Spill Prevention Program and Chapter 250 - Administration of the Land Recycling Program, and similar regulatory programs in other states a plus.
  • Geologist-in-Training status, or the ability to acquire GIT status within one year.
  • Excellent technical communication, mentoring, and writing skills.
  • Motivated, focused, hard-working, and eager to learn and excel in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in storage tank compliance and regulations, with knowledge of storage tank systems and monitoring systems (Veeder-Root systems and electronics diagnostics).
  • PA-certified tank remover license and/or PA Facility Operations Inspections (FOI) certification a plus.
  • Groundwater flow/fate and transport modeling using numerical modeling software.
  • Experience with successful site remediation (soil and groundwater) system selection, design, and implementation, preferably for petroleum release response and remediation.
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER

  • Begins to demonstrate critical thinking skills, works on small projects or portions of larger projects; assist Task Managers with aspects of projects; proactively implements Quality Management System (QMS) for project deliverables.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and rugged terrain. Exposure to active construction sites.
  • Capable of walking, hiking, or standing for extended periods during field and site visits.
  • Must be able to lift and carry tools, equipment, technical samples, documents, and other materials weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, crouching, and climbing may be required during fieldwork and sample collection.
  • Ability to safely operate and wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and boots as required by site safety protocols.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to handle technical tools, read maps and instruments, observe site conditions, and document findings accurately.
  • Comfortable working in remote or isolated locations, sometimes for extended durations.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and/or at heights, as required by specific project sites.
  • May require driving long distances to field sites and operating vehicles on unpaved or uneven roads.
