What is a senior sports software engineer?

A Senior Sports Software Engineer is an experienced software developer who specializes in creating and maintaining software solutions for the sports industry. This role typically involves designing applications for sports data analysis, live event processing, fan engagement platforms, or performance tracking tools. Senior engineers in this field often collaborate with sports analysts, data scientists, and product teams to deliver technology that enhances the experience for athletes, teams, and fans. They are also responsible for ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of these specialized systems.

What is the difference between Senior Sports Software Engineer vs Sports Software Developer?

Senior Sports Software Engineers often work closely with sports analysts, coaches, and data scientists to understand requirements and translate them into scalable software solutions. Regular meetings and feedback sessions are common, where engineers discuss technical possibilities, prototype features, and refine applications based on real-world sports data and user feedback. This collaborative environment ensures that the software meets the specific needs of end-users, supports live data integration, and enhances the overall sports performance analysis workflow. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as priorities may shift rapidly in response to sports seasons or evolving team strategies.

Job description

At WellSky, we are building impactful software solutions that prioritize end-user efficiency and shape the future of healthcare. Because we operate across multiple business units and product lines, our engineering teams tackle a diverse range of exciting challenges - from modernizing complex legacy applications to building brand-new, AI-native platforms.
We are looking for passionate problem-solvers to join us as Senior Software Engineers. Whether your expertise lies in distributed backend systems, modern frontend frameworks, or cloud infrastructure, you'll find opportunities here to make a massive impact.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead & Innovate: Design complex, scalable, and maintainable software features across various architectures (including microservices, DDD/CQRS, and event-driven systems).
  • Collaborate: Work closely with solution managers, designers, and peers to translate requirements into technical specifications that align with our mission.
  • Optimize Performance: Analyze technical challenges, identify system bottlenecks, and author technical documentation to optimize large-scale transactional processing.
  • Elevate Code Quality: Facilitate code reviews, advocate for rigorous testing methodologies (unit, integration, end-to-end), and champion modern development best practices.
  • Embrace AI: Leverage AI tools and platforms (like developer copilots) as an integral part of your daily workflow to enhance decision-making, code quality, and productivity.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 4-6 years of relevant software engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
We operate across a wide variety of tech stacks to solve complex problems. You do NOT need experience with all of these to be a great fit. If you are highly skilled in a few of these areas and have a strong foundation in software engineering, our recruiting team will work with you to find the WellSky team that best aligns with your background!
  • Backend: .NET/C#, Python (Django/Flask), Java, or Ruby.
  • Frontend: Modern JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular, or Vue.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: GCP (preferred), AWS, Azure, Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes/Helm.
  • Architecture & Data: RESTful/GraphQL APIs, event-driven messaging (Kafka/RabbitMQ/PubSub), and relational/cloud databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, BigQuery).
  • AI Tools: Experience or strong interest in using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code).
  • Domain Knowledge: Healthcare tech interoperability (FHIR, HL7, HIPAA, EMR), medical claims, or payroll accounting.

Job Expectations:
  • Willing to work additional or irregular hours as needed
  • Must work in accordance with applicable security policies and procedures to safeguard company and client information
  • Must be able to sit and view a computer screen for extended periods of time
