Job Description Summary:
Responsible for the receipt, centrifugation, pretesting preparation and suitability of blood and body fluid specimens submitted to the laboratory for testing purposes. SPC is responsible for incoming and outgoing telephone communications, routine and special laboratory clerical work. Consistent exposure to body fluid samples that may be of an infectious nature. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Keyboard experience preferred general office skills and telephone etiquette. Under the direct supervision of the Specimen Processing Supervisor for the assigned shift as scheduled. The employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Receives laboratory specimens from phlebotomists, pneumatic tube system and other avenues of delivery.
  • Records time collected and received in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Modifies collection times appropriately for all areas of the lab.
  • Canceling duplicates and recollecting samples improperly collected.
  • Prepares samples for testing according to specimen type.
  • Prepares various unique aliquots of specimens for lab testing.
  • Centrifuges specimens as appropriate.
  • Ensures bar code labels are appropriate for instruments.
  • Distributes lab specimens to specific work areas.
  • Ensures test orders match labels for processing by EGEN system.
  • Performs routine and/or special clerical duties in designated areas.
  • Responsible for an outstanding in Outreach.
  • Performs Add-ons for In-House and Outreach.
  • Registers Outreach patients and orders tests as needed.
  • Order tests for In-house from manual requisitions to be processed.
  • Verified by two identifiers Name and Date of Birth.
  • Also, enter insurance and room numbers on Outreach.
  • Pulling orders for cytology samples.
  • Mislabeled samples documented.
  • Preparing PKU's for mail- off on weekends.
  • Receives outpatients and new patient admissions and processes laboratory orders.
  • Pick-up specimens from the surgery every weekend twice a shift.
  • A liaison between Phlebotomy, Nursing, and CRT for collection of specimens as necessary.
  • Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Prepares Pap Smears for Cytology Will help cover mail off in absence of Lead Prep Tech.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Prior Laboratory experience preferred.
