Senior Specialist Tree information

What is a senior specialist tree?

A Senior Specialist Tree is a professional with advanced expertise in arboriculture, responsible for the care, maintenance, and management of trees, particularly in urban or managed landscapes. They often lead teams, advise on complex tree health issues, conduct risk assessments, and develop management plans for tree preservation and safety. Senior Specialist Trees may also be involved in policy development, training, and community education about tree care. Their work is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems, ensuring public safety, and enhancing environmental quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior specialist tree, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Specialist Tree, you need in-depth knowledge of arboriculture, tree biology, and disease management, typically supported by a degree in forestry, horticulture, or a related field and relevant certifications such as ISA Certified Arborist. Familiarity with GIS mapping, tree assessment tools, and specialized equipment for tree inspection and care is crucial. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you manage complex projects and interact effectively with clients and teams. These skills ensure the health and safety of urban forests, compliance with regulations, and the successful execution of tree management programs.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by a senior specialist tree in urban environments?

A Senior Specialist Tree often encounters challenges such as managing tree health amid urban stressors like pollution, limited root space, and construction activities. Balancing the needs of different stakeholders—such as city planners, residents, and environmental groups—while ensuring public safety and tree preservation can be demanding. Additionally, staying updated on the latest pest and disease threats, and implementing effective management strategies, are ongoing parts of the role. Collaboration with landscape architects, city officials, and maintenance crews is essential to address these challenges successfully.

What is the difference between Senior Specialist Tree vs Arborist?

AspectSenior Specialist TreeArborist
CredentialsCertifications like ISA Certified Arborist, relevant degreesISA Certified Arborist, horticulture or forestry background
Work EnvironmentUrban and suburban landscapes, utility companies, government agenciesTree care companies, municipal parks, private estates
Industry UsageUsed in utility, municipal, and consulting sectors for specialized tree managementCommonly used in tree pruning, removal, and health assessments

The Senior Specialist Tree and Arborist roles both require certification and focus on tree health and safety. The Senior Specialist Tree often involves more advanced project management and technical expertise, especially in utility or municipal settings, while Arborists typically focus on hands-on tree care and maintenance. Both roles are essential in urban forestry and landscape management, but the Senior Specialist Tree usually operates at a higher technical or supervisory level.

Job description

Requisition ID: 181240

Job Level: Senior Level

Home District/Group: KEG Business Development

Department: Business Development & Proposals

Market: Power

Employment Type: Full Time

Position Overview

Kiewit's Energy proposal team is seeking a Sr. Proposal Specialist to lead the development of client-focused proposals, qualifications packages and other pursuit-related deliverables that support the successful acquisition of new work.
In Kiewit's Energy Group, the Sr. Proposal Specialist serves as a proposal lead for a variety of pursuits, partnering with business development, operations, engineering, estimating and subject matter experts to develop compliant, compelling and strategically aligned submittals. This role requires an individual who can independently manage proposal development efforts from solicitation release through final submission while balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Successful candidates possess a strong foundation in proposal management and require minimal day-to-day oversight to execute the core responsibilities of the role as described under Key Responsibilities. They understand how to interpret client-provided RFx and procurement documents to drive the development of project-specific compliance matrices and a proposal management plan that will guide the pursuit team's proposal development efforts. This individual is also responsible for drafting and refining content into clear, evaluator-focused responses that are driven by compliance, and where appropriate, strategic messages. While strategy development is a collaborative effort led by pursuit leadership, the Sr. Proposal Specialist is expected to contribute to strategic discussions by identifying differentiators, incorporating client-focused messaging and helping translate technical and operational concepts into compelling proposal content.

Managing proposal review cycles, incorporating feedback and coordinating recovery efforts between milestones.
Supporting final production, quality control and submission activities to deliver complete and compliant proposal packages.
Maintaining and improving proposal resources, boilerplate content and knowledge assets that support future pursuits.
Perform other departmental duties as needed, including marketing support, internal communication, meeting support, document formatting, copy editing and production.

This role offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex pursuits while expanding technical knowledge, proposal leadership capabilities and strategic thinking skills. Typical opportunities range from qualifications-based selections and negotiated procurements to large, technically complex projects across a variety of markets and delivery methods.
