What are Senior Specialist Laboratory Informatics?

A Senior Specialist Laboratory Informatics is a professional who manages, implements, and optimizes laboratory information systems (LIS) and related technologies in scientific or clinical labs. They ensure that data generated in the lab is accurately captured, stored, and analyzed using specialized software and digital tools. These specialists collaborate with scientists, IT teams, and other stakeholders to improve workflow efficiency, maintain data integrity, and ensure regulatory compliance. Their expertise bridges the gap between laboratory science and information technology, playing a crucial role in modern laboratory operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Specialist Laboratory Informatics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Specialist Laboratory Informatics, you need a strong background in laboratory science, informatics, data management, and typically a degree in science, computer science, or a related field. Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs), and relevant certifications such as CLIA or CAP are highly valued. Outstanding problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you bridge the gap between technical and laboratory teams. These capabilities ensure accurate data integration, system optimization, and compliance with regulatory standards in complex lab environments.

What is the difference between Senior Specialist Laboratory Informatics vs Laboratory Data Analyst?

AspectSenior Specialist Laboratory InformaticsLaboratory Data Analyst
Required credentialsBachelor's or Master's in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, or related; certifications in Laboratory InformaticsBachelor's in Life Sciences, Data Science, or related; some roles may prefer certifications in data analysis
Work environmentLaboratories, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms, research institutionsLaboratories, research centers, healthcare facilities, biotech companies
Employer and industry usageUsed in biotech, pharma, and research industries for managing lab data systemsCommon in healthcare, research, and biotech sectors for analyzing lab data

The Senior Specialist Laboratory Informatics focuses on managing and optimizing laboratory information systems, requiring specialized informatics skills. In contrast, the Laboratory Data Analyst primarily analyzes lab data to support research and decision-making. While both roles involve lab data, the Senior Specialist emphasizes system management and integration, whereas the Data Analyst emphasizes data interpretation and reporting.

How does a Senior Specialist in Laboratory Informatics typically collaborate with laboratory staff and IT teams?

A Senior Specialist in Laboratory Informatics acts as a critical bridge between laboratory personnel and IT departments. They work closely with lab staff to understand workflow needs, troubleshoot system issues, and ensure that informatics solutions align with scientific requirements. Additionally, they frequently coordinate with IT teams to implement, optimize, and maintain laboratory information management systems (LIMS), ensuring data integrity and regulatory compliance. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as the role often involves leading cross-functional teams and training end-users on new technologies.

Job description

ย About the Role...

Valo Health is seeking an Associate Director to lead laboratory informatics and platform automation across its drug discovery organization. The role owns strategy, implementation, and operational performance across both domains, builds the scientific data infrastructure connecting bench data to Valo's Opal Computational Platform, and leads a technical team. The ideal candidate brings deep domain expertise and a proven track record of people leadership in a fast-paced R&D environment.

What You'll Do...ย

Your primary areas of responsibility will be:

  • Own strategy, implementation, and operations across laboratory informatics systems (LIMS, ELN, SDMS, data analysis tools) and hardware automation platforms (HTS, compound management, instrument integration).
  • Define roadmap priorities with scientific and technical stakeholders; translate needs into actionable plans and deliver reliable solutions.
  • Partner with the Data Platform team to build data infrastructure, including ontologies, pipelines, and LIMS integrations; design workflow integrations that streamline operations and enable downstream AI/ML use.
  • Gather requirements from stakeholders to guide development across SDMS, ELN, and visualization tools; oversee user requirement specifications and UAT.
  • Implement data security and IP protection standards in partnership with Data Governance teams.
  • Oversee data ingestion pipelines and LIMS integrations, ensuring integrity, compliance, and harmonization of legacy and current experimental data.
  • Partner with scientific power users and facilities to manage vendor relationships, including contract renewals, installations, application support, and user training; oversee resource prioritization, cost monitoring, and lifecycle planning with contracts, finance, and IT.
  • Serve as the senior point of expertise for informatics and automation, building strong relationships across Biology, Chemistry, DMPK, and Data Sciences.
  • Monitor operational performance and resolve technical issues across informatics and automation platforms.
  • Lead automation platform operations including High-Res Cellario, Biosero Green Button Go, and compound management; evaluate and drive acquisition of new hardware to meet evolving scientific needs.
  • Lead and develop the technical team, including hiring, mentoring, and career development.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in informatics and automation and apply new approaches to strengthen platform capabilities.

What You Bring...ย

  • PhD with 10+ years in laboratory informatics and/or automation in drug discovery, or BS/MS with 15+ years.
  • Life sciences background in Screening, Biology, Chemistry, DMPK, multi-omics, or NGS.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and deliver high-impact informatics and automation programs in pharma or biotech R&D.
  • Experience developing roadmaps, translating scientific needs into technical plans, and managing competing priorities.
  • Experience across the full informatics software lifecycle: requirements gathering, design, implementation, UAT, and lifecycle management.
  • Deep knowledge of LIMS, ELN, SDMS, and automation systems; experience integrating HTS automation, mass spectrometry, and compound management with tools such as Dotmatics and Snowflake.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence decisions at all levels.
  • Proven track record managing complex software infrastructure and vendor interoperability.

You May Also Bring...

  • Experience with SaaS platforms, cloud services, and API integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with High-Res Cellario work cells and Biosero Green Button Go workflows.
