Job description

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Safety Assurance Engineer- Rail & Transit to lead and deliver safety and risk assurance activities across complex rail and transit projects in Canada and North America.

The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and implementing safety assurance strategies aligned with CENELEC standards and Canadian regulatory frameworks (including CMREA), supporting major rail programmes.

This role is ideal for someone who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to engage clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead safety assurance activities, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and allocation of safety requirements
  • Support the development and delivery of safety assurance strategies across rail and transit projects
  • Produce and/or review safety assurance deliverables, including Safety Plans, Safety Cases, Hazard Logs, and related documentation
  • Undertake hazard identification and risk assessment activities (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, risk workshops)
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and client requirements - including CENELEC standards and Canadian regulatory frameworks (including CMREA)
  • Establish and define safety requirements across all railway system disciplines, including civil, architectural, electrical, mechanical, hardware, and software
  • Contribute to Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) or Independent Competent Person (ICP) activities, where applicable
  • Support system integration, testing, validation, and commissioning activities from a safety perspective
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, suppliers, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure effective communication and coordination of safety requirements
  • Engage with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders to support successful project delivery
  • Contribute to System Assurance Audits and support continuous improvement through the application of lessons learned and industry best practices
  • Provide technical input and assurance across different subsystems and disciplines as required

Qualifications

  • Minimum a bachelor's degree in Engineering (or equivalent)
  • P.Eng designation or eligibility for certification in a Canadian province (or equivalent)

Desirable Competencies and Experience

  • Experience in rail and transit safety assurance across one or more disciplines (e.g. signalling - CBTC/ETCS desirable, infrastructure, rolling stock, electrification, operations & maintenance)
  • 10+ years of experience in rail safety assurance or RAMS engineering (for senior/principal roles)
  • Familiarity with relevant safety standards and frameworks (e.g. CENELEC EN 50126/8/9, CSM-RA, CMREA, IEC standards, or equivalent)
  • Experience in Independent Safety Assessment (ISA), auditing, or compliance activities
  • Involvement in independent quality activities such as witnessing, trial running, testing, validation, or verification
  • Understanding of system safety lifecycle and hazard management processes
  • Experience working within the Canadian rail industry is advantageous, but not essential
