What is a senior software engineer contract?

A Senior Software Engineer Contract refers to a temporary employment agreement where an experienced software engineer is hired for a specific period or project rather than as a permanent employee. These professionals bring advanced technical skills and leadership to design, develop, and maintain complex software systems. Contract roles often focus on delivering specialized expertise, meeting project deadlines, and providing mentorship to junior team members. Compensation and benefits may differ from full-time positions, and contracts can range from a few months to a year or more depending on the project's scope.

What are senior software engineer contract jobs?

Senior software engineer contract jobs involve working on software engineering projects on a temporary contract basis. Your duties and responsibilities in this career vary depending on the needs of each client. In general, you utilize your coding skills and computer program knowledge to create software, applications, or operating systems. You typically work with a software company or information technology organization. As a contractor, you work with clients to assess their needs and create or update software or systems to meet the needs of each client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior software engineer on a contract basis, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Software Engineer on contract, you need advanced programming skills, a strong understanding of software architecture, and several years of experience, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications. Proficiency with development tools like Git, CI/CD systems, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and familiarity with Agile methodologies are typically expected. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and adjusting to new projects quickly. These skills and qualities enable contract engineers to deliver high-quality solutions efficiently, integrate smoothly into client environments, and meet project goals within tight timelines.

What are the typical challenges faced by senior software engineers working on contract assignments?

Senior Software Engineers on contract often navigate challenges such as quickly acclimating to new codebases and team cultures, managing time effectively across multiple projects, and balancing client expectations with technical feasibility. Since contracts are temporary, there may be less onboarding support and less time to build deep relationships with permanent team members, making communication skills especially important. However, this environment also allows for exposure to diverse technologies and problem-solving scenarios, which can significantly enhance your expertise and professional network.

Job description

Agility's commercially deployed humanoids operate alongside teams in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers—tackling physically demanding and repetitive tasks while enabling workers to focus on higher-value work. With industry-leading safety standards and years of proven deployment data, we're pioneering a new era of automation that enhances human potential.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer with deep expertise in electronics, embedded systems, and production test strategy. In this role, you will lead the development and optimization of robust, scalable test infrastructure to ensure the performance, quality, and reliability of our robotic systems. You will mentor junior engineers, drive best practices across the test organization, and act as a technical liaison between cross-functional teams including Design, Systems, Firmware, and Manufacturing.

This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the design and manufacturability of cutting-edge robotic systems from early concept through high-volume production.

About the Work
  • Serve as the technical owner and architect for manufacturing test systems supporting electrical, embedded, and control subsystems across multiple product lines.
  • Define and drive automated production test strategies for embedded hardware, maximizing coverage, repeatability, traceability, and throughput.
  • Partner with Design, Systems, Firmware, and Manufacturing teams to embed Design-for-Test (DFT) and Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM) principles early in product development.
  • Own the full lifecycle of manufacturing test platforms, including requirements definition, hardware and software development, deployment, validation, and long-term sustainment.
  • Lead root cause analysis and failure investigations by analyzing test data, identifying trends, and driving corrective and preventive actions at the system level.
  • Provide technical leadership during New Product Introduction (NPI) by establishing scalable, production-ready test strategies from EVT/DVT through ramp and steady-state production.
  • Define and uphold test documentation standards, ensuring clear, maintainable specifications, procedures, and technical records for test equipment and processes.
  • Mentor and technically guide manufacturing test engineers and technicians, elevating test rigor, design quality, and engineering best practices.
  • Develop and deploy tools for test data collection, visualization, database integration, and automated reporting to support real-time manufacturing and quality decisions.
  • Ensure manufacturing test processes align with internal quality systems and applicable industry standards.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in manufacturing test engineering or related roles, with ownership of complex electro-mechanical or embedded system test solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading end-to-end test system development in robotics, automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics manufacturing environments.
  • Strong proficiency in test software development (Python preferred), including automation, instrumentation control, and data analysis.
  • Deep understanding of embedded systems and communication protocols (I²C, SPI, UART, CAN, EtherCAT).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and layouts; experience with ECAD tools (Altium preferred).
  • Hands-on experience designing and deploying test fixtures, harnesses, and production test stations.
  • Familiarity with Linux- or RTOS-based systems (e.g., FreeRTOS) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing methodologies.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams through technical leadership and sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present complex technical concepts.
  • Strong hands-on, builder mindset—you are comfortable troubleshooting hardware and software on the factory floor.
Bonus Points
  • Experience integrating manufacturing test systems with MES, test databases, and SPC frameworks.
  • Exposure to safety-critical or regulated product development environments.
  • Background in robotics or highly integrated mechatronic systems.
