Job description

Senior Software Engineer

This role is onsite in Durham, North Carolina with 2-3 days in-office. Please note that we unfortunately cannot sponsor H1B visas at this time and candidates must live in North Carolina.

Who We Are

Arpio is building the next generation of disaster recovery for the cloud.

Modern enterprises run their most critical applications in complex, cloud-native environments, and the list of threats to those applications keeps growing: outages, ransomware, bad actors, and plain human error. We know resilience is about more than just backing up data, so we built a best-in-class SaaS platform that delivers automated, application-aware disaster recovery across both AWS and Azure, recovering the entire application stack rather than isolated resources.

Behind the scenes, we're a small but mighty team (YC21, Series A-backed) who love tackling hard problems and learning new things. We're fired up about building an innovative product and company from the ground up

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll work on the platform that enterprises trust to keep them running through outages, ransomware attacks, and human error. You'll design and build the systems that replicate live cloud environments, keep a low-cost 'pilot light' continuously synchronized with production, and execute one-click failover that meets aggressive RTO and RPO targets. This is deep, cloud-native work: you'll spend your days reasoning about distributed systems, cloud provider APIs, and the failure modes that only show up when something has actually gone wrong. We build our backend in Python and our front end in Angular. The bar is high, because when a customer invokes Arpio, our software simply has to work.
You'll join a team where your decisions carry real weight. There's room to own meaningful pieces of the product end to end, shape technical direction, and grow alongside a company that's expanding its footprint across cloud providers.

What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and operate core platform services that replicate and recover complex cloud environments with speed and precision.
  • Develop and extend Arpio's application-aware orchestration engine, mapping dependencies and recovering entire application stacks.
  • Work directly against cloud provider APIs (AWS and Azure today), building robust abstractions that absorb their differences and edge cases.
  • Build for failure: design systems that behave correctly during outages and degraded conditions, since that's exactly when our customers rely on them.
  • Own features end to end, from design and implementation through testing, deployment, monitoring, and support.
  • Contribute to the reliability, scalability, and security of a fully-managed SaaS platform that protects enterprise production workloads.
  • Raise the engineering bar through thoughtful code review, technical design discussions, and mentorship of other engineers.
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and operating production systems.
  • Hands-on experience building on at least one major cloud provider (AWS or Azure preferred; GCP, Oracle, or others welcome).
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, concurrency, and the realities of operating software at scale.
  • A pragmatic, well-tested approach to writing code. Our stack is Python and Angular; deep experience in either is a plus, but we expect strong engineers to ramp on a new language or framework quickly.
  • Comfort working close to infrastructure: APIs, networking, and the operational behavior of cloud services, not just application logic on top of them.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; you can explain a tricky design clearly and disagree productively.
How You Work
  • You take ownership. You see a problem through from ambiguity to a shipped, monitored, working solution, and you stick around for what happens after it ships.
  • You value simplicity. You reach for the clearest design that solves the real problem, and you're comfortable removing complexity rather than adding it.
  • You communicate openly. You write things down, surface trade-offs, and make it easy for teammates to build on your work.
  • You operate with autonomy. You don't wait to be told what to do. You find the important work and drive it.
  • You're a steady hand. You stay calm and methodical under pressure, which is exactly the temperament recovery software demands.
Salary and Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • Arpio will cover 100% of your personal medical premiums, 100% of your life insurance premium, and 75% of your personal premiums for vision and dental (because the insurance companies won’t let us pay 100%). For your dependents, Arpio will cover 75% of medical, dental, and vision premiums. No life insurance is included.
  • For fully remote employees, a $125 home office stipend or $250 company-subsidized co-working membership
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Small, collaborative team environment
  • Opportunity to work on the cutting edge of cloud technology

Arpio is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a diverse team and an inclusive workplace, and we welcome applicants of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. We provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities; if you need an accommodation during the application or interview process, let us know.
