What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, typically with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS, or similar tools, along with experience in programming languages like Python or C++, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and interpreting complex data. These competencies ensure accurate modeling, effective project delivery, and innovation in designing and optimizing engineering systems.

What are the typical collaboration points between a Senior Simulation Engineer and other engineering teams?

As a Senior Simulation Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as design, development, and testing to ensure simulation models accurately reflect real-world conditions. This often involves attending design reviews, sharing simulation results, and providing feedback to optimize product performance. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as your insights directly influence design decisions and help troubleshoot issues early in the development cycle. Regular meetings and shared documentation platforms are commonly used to keep everyone aligned and informed.

What are Senior Simulation Engineers?

Senior Simulation Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and analyze complex simulations to model real-world systems and processes. They use advanced software tools and mathematical models to predict performance, identify potential issues, and optimize designs in fields such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and energy. Their work helps organizations make informed decisions and improve product reliability and efficiency. Senior Simulation Engineers often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional groups to ensure the effective implementation of simulation solutions.

What is the difference between Senior Simulation Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectSenior Simulation EngineerSimulation Engineer

Job description

As a Senior Simulation Trainer, you will own the full lifecycle of simulation-based learning for MISO's control room operators and engineers - from assessing needs and scripting scenarios to facilitating sessions, leading structured debriefs, and measuring program effectiveness. You will build a robust library of simulations spanning normal operations, abnormal conditions, and emergency response, with particular emphasis on contingency and system disturbance scenarios that challenge operators to perform under pressure.
You will bring firsthand knowledge of control room operations or energy management systems to the work, using that experience to design scenarios that are operationally rigorous, procedurally accurate, and grounded in how the grid actually behaves. You will partner closely with the simulator product owner, operations management, and technical SMEs to keep simulation content current and aligned to real-world conditions. You will also support foundational programs like new operator onboarding, on-the-job training, desk qualifications, and operator training drills - all aimed at building depth and bench strength in the control room.
In one year as a Senior Simulation Trainer, you will know you were successful if:
  • You have built and maintained a well-organized, operationally rigorous simulation scenario library - including abnormal and emergency scenarios - that is actively used by control room operators at all experience levels
  • You have established strong, trusted relationships with operations employees, control room management, and technical SMEs
  • Your structured debriefs are recognized as high-quality learning experiences that drive meaningful behavioral change and operational improvement
  • You have stood up a metrics and evaluation framework that tracks operator performance trends and demonstrates the impact of simulation training on grid reliability outcomes

We are looking for energetic and dedicated candidates who have:
  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of six (6) years of relevant work experience
  • Prior experience as a control room operator or control room engineer, or equivalent hands-on experience with energy management systems - candidates with this background will be prioritized
  • Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate simulation-based or scenario-based training, particularly in high-stakes or safety-critical environments
  • Strong facilitation skills, including the ability to lead structured pre-briefings and post-simulation debriefs that produce real operational learning
  • Demonstrated project management experience, with the ability to manage multiple simulation development efforts simultaneously
  • The ability to negotiate and influence within a collaborative framework

We would also prefer candidates with the following:
  • Experience with GE EMS simulator or a comparable energy management system simulator
  • Working knowledge of Learning and Development tools and methodologies, including adult learning theory and instructional design frameworks such as ADDIE
  • Experience designing evaluation and measurement frameworks tied to operational or performance outcomes

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
