Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer information

What does a senior sensor fusion engineer do?

A Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer designs and implements algorithms that integrate data from multiple sensors, such as cameras, radars, and lidars, to create a comprehensive understanding of the environment. This role is essential in fields like autonomous vehicles, robotics, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Senior engineers not only develop and optimize fusion algorithms, but also analyze sensor data, ensure system reliability, and mentor junior team members. They often collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration and performance. Their expertise helps improve the accuracy, safety, and efficiency of complex sensor-based systems.

How does a senior sensor fusion engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development of perception systems?

As a Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer, you will work closely with software engineers, hardware designers, data scientists, and product managers to integrate data from multiple sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, and RADAR. Collaboration often involves defining sensor requirements, troubleshooting integration issues, and optimizing algorithms for real-time performance. Regular cross-team meetings and code reviews are common, ensuring alignment on system architecture and performance targets. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-specialists are key to success in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior sensor fusion engineer, and why are they important?

A Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer requires advanced knowledge of sensor technologies, signal processing, and algorithms, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages such as C++, Python, and MATLAB, as well as experience with tools like ROS and sensor simulation platforms, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable sensor fusion systems that enable accurate perception and decision-making in complex environments such as autonomous vehicles or robotics.

What is the difference between Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer vs Sensor Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Sensor Fusion EngineerSensor Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; experience with sensor data processingBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of sensor integration
Work EnvironmentResearch and development teams, automotive, aerospace, robotics industriesDesign and testing of sensor systems, often in automotive, industrial, or consumer electronics sectors
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in autonomous vehicles, robotics, aerospace for sensor data fusionUsed in product development, sensor integration, and system testing in similar industries

The main difference is that a Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer focuses on integrating multiple sensor data sources to create cohesive perception systems, often requiring advanced algorithms and data processing skills. In contrast, a Sensor Systems Engineer typically handles the design, implementation, and testing of sensor hardware and systems. Both roles are vital in industries like automotive and aerospace but differ in their core responsibilities and expertise areas.

Job description

We are looking for a strong engineer in the DRIVE Road structure / Online mapping / Context Fusion team. In this role, you will help craft and guide the future of our autonomous driving solution for providing a complete 3D world model including fusing signals between map and perception. You will be working closely with our perception and planning teams in providing a world model that is complete and able to drive in the most challenging roads and intersections in the U.S and China

It is a very exciting role that provides a breadth of interesting areas and is central to our vision in AV. Are you interested in inventing human level AI for navigation in the unconstrained world under any conditions. If so, join us.

What You'll Be Doing: Develop core functionality for autonomous driving in all geographies based on the fusion of SOTA perception DNN and map signals. Generate real-time 3D world model utilized by planning, incorporating a variety of inputs from sensors and external sources. Enable HD mapless driving in complex urban scenarios by creating enriched BEV models of the world.

Enable L3 level autonomy in highway scenarios by creating accurate, reliable and safe models of the world from camera, lidar, radar perception and map signals Build fused static obstacles and occupancy grids and build occlusion masks to enrich AV scenarios. Be a technology leader by providing the team guidance on approaches to be taken to solve the hardest of AV problems. Be a hands-on collaborator with the team.

Mentoring strong engineers within the team. Make sure our algorithms work well on large amounts of real and synthetic data, in a diverse range of environments and conditions Produce code and designs following automotive quality and safety standards. What We Need To See: BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related fields or equivalent experience 8+ years of experience, with at least 2+ years in the AV or robotics industry.
