Job Summary
The Mustard Seed Project of Key Peninsula seeks an experienced and mission-driven Director of Finance to serve as the organization's senior financial leader. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and working closely with the Board of Directors and Finance Committee, the Director of Finance is responsible for the financial stewardship, planning, reporting, compliance, and long-term sustainability of a growing nonprofit organization serving older adults.
The Director of Finance serves as a member of the senior leadership team and provides strategic financial leadership for all organizational operations. The position supervises two finance staff and is responsible for financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit coordination, cash management, grant compliance, and internal controls.
The Mustard Seed Project's mission is to ensure choices for healthy aging on the Key Peninsula by connecting older adults with innovative programs, services, housing, and resources. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, The Mustard Seed Project has been recognized nationally with the National Council on Aging's 2026 Innovator Award for creating innovative solutions that improve the lives of older adults.
Today, the organization operates senior center programs, transportation services, and Mustard Seed Village, a Green House Project™-aligned assisted living and memory care community located in Key Center.
Responsibilities
• Provide strategic financial leadership and advice to the CEO, leadership team, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.
• Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and analyses.
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning processes.
• Monitor organizational financial performance and provide recommendations regarding operational and strategic decisions.
• Oversee all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and financial reporting through supervision of finance staff.
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and accounting procedures.
• Coordinate annual financial reviews and audits and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as grant and contract requirements.
• Support development of grant budgets and oversee grant financial reporting.
• Monitor organizational cash flow, reserves, investments, and financial risk.
• Collaborate with program and operational leaders to develop financial benchmarks and performance measures.
• Support financial planning related to housing, assisted living, memory care, and other mission-driven initiatives.
Required Qualifications
• Five or more years of progressively responsible nonprofit accounting, finance, or financial management experience.
• Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and audit preparation.
• Experience presenting financial information to boards, finance committees, or executive leadership.
• Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, internal controls, and grant compliance requirements.
• Experience supervising accounting or finance staff.
• High level proficiency with QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting systems.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
• CPA or other relevant professional certification.
• Experience in nonprofit housing, senior services, healthcare, assisted living, or human services organizations.
• Experience with federal and state grant management and single audits.
