What is a senior RF engineer?

Senior RF Engineers are experienced professionals who design, implement, and optimize radio frequency (RF) systems used in telecommunications, broadcasting, and other wireless communications. They are responsible for ensuring the performance and reliability of RF networks by conducting tests, troubleshooting issues, and developing solutions to improve signal quality. Senior RF Engineers often lead project teams, mentor junior engineers, and work closely with other departments to deliver effective wireless communication solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior RF engineer?

To thrive as a Senior RF Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of radio frequency theory, wireless communication systems, and a relevant engineering degree, often complemented by several years of industry experience. Familiarity with RF simulation tools (such as CST, HFSS, or ADS), network analyzers, and certifications like Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP) are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help in troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are vital for designing reliable RF solutions, optimizing performance, and ensuring seamless integration in complex wireless environments.

What are some common technical challenges faced by senior RF engineers, and how are they typically addressed within engineering teams?

Senior RF Engineers often encounter challenges related to signal interference, system integration, and maintaining optimal performance under real-world conditions. These issues are typically addressed through collaborative troubleshooting with cross-functional teams, such as hardware, software, and test engineers. Utilizing advanced simulation tools, performing thorough field testing, and conducting design reviews are standard practices to ensure solutions are effective and reliable. Regular knowledge sharing within the team helps in quickly resolving complex RF problems and staying updated with evolving technologies.

What is the difference between Senior Rf Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectSenior RF EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, certifications like FCC or RF-specific coursesBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field, some certifications beneficial
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and troubleshooting RF systems in labs or fieldAssist in RF system development, testing, and maintenance
ResponsibilitiesLead projects, optimize RF performance, mentor junior staffSupport RF design, perform measurements, and document results

The main difference lies in experience and responsibility level. Senior RF Engineers typically lead projects and mentor others, while RF Engineers focus on supporting design and testing tasks. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, but the senior position involves more leadership and strategic planning.

Is RF engineering in demand?

RF engineering is in high demand due to the growth of wireless communication, 5G networks, and IoT devices. Senior RF engineers with expertise in signal processing, antenna design, and testing are sought after across telecommunications, aerospace, and defense industries.

What does a senior RF engineer do?

A senior RF engineer designs, develops, and tests radio frequency systems and components used in wireless communication devices. They analyze signal performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with industry standards, often using tools like spectrum analyzers and simulation software. Their role requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and experience with RF design and testing processes.

Job description

Overview
Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $3.9B company and 16,000 people work alongside our clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism.
The Senior Interconnect Engineer is responsible for the design, validation, and sustainment of electrical interconnection systems that meet the stringent requirements of military and civil platforms. This role integrates multidisciplinary technical expertise with compliance-driven execution to ensure that wire harnesses, connectors, and interface architectures conform to mission-critical standards such as AS50881 (wiring aerospace vehicles) and IPC/WHMA-A-620 (acceptability of cable and wire harness assemblies). The Senior Interconnect Engineer independently develops and releases complete interconnect Technical Data Packages (TDPs) using PTC CREO Schematics and PTC CREO Parametric tools that conform to ASME Y14-series drafting standards. Senior Interconnect Engineers serve as the bridge between electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, systems engineering (integration), and manufacturing-translating interface requirements into robust, traceable, and certifiable interconnect solutions.
Senior Interconnect Engineers are engaged throughout the full Product Lifecycle Management process. They advise on interface strategy during early design phases, support BOM development for interconnect components, enable integration during system build, and provide sustainment support for depot-level maintenance and upgrades. They work with minimal supervision, provide Interconnect technical leadership on projects, and review the work of junior interconnect engineers.
At V2X Indianapolis, Senior Interconnect Engineers support platforms ranging from ground systems to FAA and DoD aircraft, requiring expertise in Aerospace, Electrical, RF, Mechanical Packaging, and Systems Integration. Their work ensures that every signal and power path is engineered for reliability, maintainability, and compliance-ready for deployment in the most demanding operational environments.
Travel: Limited, in support of program objectives.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute cable and wire harness design tasks with minimal supervision for aviation-focused military applications.
    • Apply AS50881 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship and routing standards to cable/harness designs.
    • Interpret and translate Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and system requirements into interconnect architecture, pin mapping, and routing strategies.
    • Incorporate electrical design considerations into wiring systems, including voltage drop, AWG selection, breaker sizing, RF line loss, relay usage, and grounding/shielding practices.
  • Independently create and maintain Technical Data Packages (TDPs), ensuring configuration control and revision traceability.
    • Use PTC CREO Schematics and PTC CREO Parametric to generate:
      • Wiring diagrams and interconnect schematics
      • Harness drawings and wire tables
      • Detail and assembly models
      • Installation drawings and related documentation
    • Develop interconnect documentation sets formatted to ASME Y14.100, Y14.24, and Y14.5 standards, consistent with MIL-STD-31000.
    • Use PTC Windchill for document release, BOM integration, and change management.
  • Participate in technical project execution activities, trade studies, and engineering analyses related to interconnect design.
  • Coordinate with systems, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and program teams to ensure interconnect solutions meet fit, function, and performance requirements.
  • Support fit checks, routing validation, and integration activities during system build and test as needed.
