What is the difference between Senior Remote Hardware Engineer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Remote Hardware EngineerEmbedded Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field; certifications like PMP or Cisco are commonBachelor's/Master's in Electrical/Computer Engineering; certifications like ARM or RTOS certifications are common
Work EnvironmentRemote, collaborative teams, hardware design, testing, and troubleshootingRemote or on-site, embedded software/hardware development, firmware programming
Industry UsageElectronics, IoT, consumer devices, industrial equipmentConsumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, industrial automation

The Senior Remote Hardware Engineer focuses on designing and testing hardware components remotely, often collaborating across teams. In contrast, Embedded Systems Engineers specialize in developing firmware and embedded software for hardware devices. While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, the Senior Remote Hardware Engineer emphasizes hardware design, whereas Embedded Systems Engineers focus on software integration within hardware systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior remote hardware engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Remote Hardware Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of electronic circuit design, hardware architecture, and embedded systems, typically backed by a degree in electrical engineering and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with CAD tools like Altium Designer or OrCAD, hardware debugging equipment, and experience with compliance testing are standard technical requirements. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills are essential for collaborating across remote teams and driving projects to completion. These competencies ensure that complex hardware solutions are developed efficiently, meet quality standards, and align with organizational goals in a remote work environment.

What does a senior remote hardware engineer do?

A Senior Remote Hardware Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and overseeing the development of computer hardware and related systems, often while working remotely. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to create hardware components such as circuit boards, processors, and memory devices. Their role includes troubleshooting hardware issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring products meet technical specifications and industry standards. Senior engineers also mentor junior team members and contribute to strategic decisions regarding hardware development.

How does a senior remote hardware engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams when working offsite?

Senior Remote Hardware Engineers frequently work with multidisciplinary teams, including software developers, project managers, and manufacturing specialists. Collaboration often takes place through video conferences, shared design platforms, and cloud-based documentation tools, enabling real-time feedback and design iteration. Effective communication and proactive status updates are essential to ensure alignment on project goals, timelines, and technical requirements. Remote engineers may also participate in regular virtual stand-up meetings and use collaborative tools for troubleshooting and hardware validation, ensuring seamless integration across different teams.

Job description

Senior IoT Engineer

Senior IoT Engineer (100% Remote)

Location: Remote (US-Based)

Salary range: $125K-$160K

Position Type: Full-Time

Reports To: VP of Hardware Engineering

Are you an experienced IoT Engineer with a deep passion for wireless protocols and sustainable technology? We are seeking a Senior IoT Engineer to lead the architecture and execution of our next-generation LoRaWAN integration.

In this role, you will own the LoRaWAN stack end-to-end, evaluating network server solutions, designing integration architectures, and driving hardware platforms from initial bring-up all the way through production validation in commercial environments.

What You Will Do

LoRaWAN Integration & Architecture

  • Lead the evaluation and selection of LoRaWAN network server solutions (on-premise and cloud-hosted).

  • Design and implement an end-to-end LoRaWAN integration architecture across embedded devices, gateways, network servers, and cloud application layers.

  • Own channel plan definitions, device provisioning, and join/session management.

  • Develop application firmware integration for LoRaWAN-connected devices in close collaboration with the embedded firmware team.

  • Drive bring-up, Design Verification Testing (DVT), and production validation of wireless hardware platforms.

Platform & Cloud Integration

  • Integrate LoRaWAN network server data into our cloud platform and application firmware stack.

  • Build and maintain device management, Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware update, and telemetry pipelines for wireless IoT devices.

  • Partner with application firmware engineers on protocol design, data modeling, and API contracts between embedded and cloud layers.

Engineering Excellence

  • Contribute to core wireless platform architecture decisions alongside Principal and Lead Engineers.

  • Define and document integration interfaces, protocol specifications, and system test plans.

  • Perform full-stack system debugging across RF, MAC, network server, and application layers.

  • Support RF and industry certification activities for LoRaWAN-connected products.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in IoT systems engineering with demonstrated depth in wireless protocol implementation.

  • Hands-on experience designing and deploying LoRaWAN solutions (network server configuration, device onboarding, channel planning, MAC layer behavior).

  • Proficiency in bare metal C/C++ firmware development for constrained embedded IoT devices.

  • Experience integrating IoT device data into cloud platforms via MQTT, HTTP/HTTPS, or similar protocols.

  • Solid understanding of RF fundamentals relevant to LoRaWAN (link budget, spreading factor selection, interference mitigation).

  • Ability to work comfortably across embedded, network, and cloud layers of an IoT stack.

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience with LoRaWAN network servers such as ChirpStack, The Things Stack, or AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN.

  • Familiarity with CBOR, WDP, or custom binary protocol design for low-power IoT devices.

  • Experience in energy management, building automation, or commercial/industrial IoT deployments.

  • Background developing application firmware for multi-protocol platforms (LoRaWAN combined with Wi-Fi, BLE, or Cellular).

  • Experience supporting RF certification processes (FCC, LoRa Alliance).

  • Familiarity with Git-based collaborative workflows and Agile methodologies.

Why Join Us?

You will work alongside senior industry experts on real-world deployments that directly impact energy efficiency and sustainability. We offer a high-visibility, technical role with room to shape the future of our wireless platform strategy.
