What does a senior reliability engineer do?

A Senior Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring that systems, products, or processes operate reliably and efficiently over time. They analyze failure data, design reliability tests, develop maintenance strategies, and work with cross-functional teams to improve system performance and reduce downtime. Their expertise helps organizations minimize risk, optimize lifecycle costs, and maintain high standards of quality and safety. Senior Reliability Engineers often mentor junior team members and play a key role in developing reliability standards and best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Reliability Engineer, you need expertise in reliability engineering principles, root cause analysis, and a relevant engineering degree such as mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering. Familiarity with tools like FMEA, RCA software, CMMS, and certifications such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are often required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams set top performers apart. These skills are essential for minimizing downtime, improving system reliability, and ensuring safe, efficient operations.

What are some common challenges faced by senior reliability engineers, and how are they typically addressed within the team?

Senior Reliability Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex system failures, balancing proactive maintenance with urgent reactive fixes, and ensuring consistent communication across multidisciplinary teams. These challenges are typically addressed through root cause analysis, prioritization frameworks, and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing. Regular collaboration with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams helps in developing effective solutions and continuous improvement strategies.

What is the difference between Senior Reliability Engineer vs Reliability Engineer?

AspectSenior Reliability EngineerReliability Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires 5+ years experience, certifications like CRE or Six SigmaEntry to mid-level, often with 2-4 years experience, similar certifications

Job description

Title:
Senior Systems Engineer (MBSE)
Job Summary
KBR is seeking a Senior MBSE Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership on a Department of War program supporting complex system development across the full systems engineering lifecycle. This position serves as the senior authority for Model-Based Systems Engineering strategy, architecture governance, and digital engineering implementation, ensuring consistency across engineering disciplines and program workstreams. The role provides technical direction for requirements engineering, system architecture development, model governance, and integration activities while maintaining alignment with program objectives, acquisition milestones, and customer expectations. Working directly with program leadership, engineering teams, and government stakeholders, this position drives the development of scalable model-based solutions that improve technical rigor, traceability, and decision-making. The selected candidate will lead engineering teams, guide architecture standards, and advance digital engineering maturity throughout the program lifecycle.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Own and drive the program-wide MBSE strategy, architecture framework, modeling standards, and governance processes utilizing SysML/UML within Cameo Systems Modeler and related modeling environments.
  • Lead requirements engineering activities across the systems lifecycle, including requirements elicitation, decomposition, allocation, traceability, verification, and architecture integration at the program level.
  • Define and govern model repository structures, custom profiles, architecture standards, and configuration management practices to ensure model integrity and consistency across distributed engineering teams.
  • Direct TeamWork Cloud implementation and governance activities, including branching strategies, baseline management, multi-team collaboration, version control, and repository administration.
  • Lead technical planning, preparation, and execution of major engineering reviews, milestone events, architecture assessments, and customer-facing technical engagements.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between systems engineering, software, hardware, integration, test, manufacturing, logistics, and program management organizations to maintain architectural alignment and technical consistency.
  • Author, review, approve, and govern high-level technical documentation including architecture descriptions, specifications, verification plans, systems engineering products, and executive-level reports.
  • Provide technical leadership for alignment with Department of War architecture frameworks, acquisition processes, engineering reviews, and program milestone decisions.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop systems engineering personnel through technical oversight, quality reviews, modeling standards implementation, and professional development activities.
  • Direct initiatives extending MBSE methodologies into manufacturing, producibility, reliability, logistics, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Bill of Materials (BOM), and program management applications.
  • Represent systems engineering leadership during customer briefings, executive reviews, program status meetings, and strategic planning activities.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of mission and business requirements.

Basic Qualifications
  • Active Secret security clearance or eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 12+ years of Systems Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering experience supporting complex systems throughout the full systems lifecycle.
  • Experience developing, governing, and maintaining SysML and UML architectures using Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, TeamWork Cloud, or comparable MBSE toolsets.
  • Experience leading Department of War engineering programs utilizing DoDAF architecture products, formal technical reviews, acquisition milestones, and systems engineering lifecycle processes.
  • Experience serving as a technical lead, chief engineer, lead architect, or equivalent engineering leadership role on an MBSE-driven program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience implementing Model-Based Acquisition (MBA) methodologies and Digital Engineering transformation initiatives.
  • Experience administering TeamWork Cloud environments and enterprise-scale model governance processes.
  • Experience integrating MBSE methodologies with manufacturing, reliability engineering, logistics, producibility, WBS, or BOM management activities.
  • Experience using DOORS, Azure DevOps, Jira, PLM platforms, SharePoint, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • INCOSE CSEP, ESEP, or equivalent systems engineering certification.
  • Experience supporting large-scale defense modernization, weapon systems, missile defense, aviation, or space programs.

Note: This position is contingent upon contract funding and formal program award. Employment offers extended under this requisition are conditional and subject to confirmation of award.
