ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Artera is hiring a Senior Staff AI Builder to help define what comes next for our agentic platform. You'll be the recognized AI-native expert whose influence compounds across squads — a senior IC who turns ambitious AI strategy into the production systems our customers count on every day.

You'll bring industry-leading AI-native fluency to planning, evaluation, and reliability across multiple squads, graduating shared capabilities from one squad's project into primitives the whole company builds on.

At this level, you'll cut through ambiguity with conviction, taking on the systemic problems where quality, velocity, cost, and risk collide - and where the external AI landscape shifts faster than anyone's roadmap. You'll own the operational plans that shape our short to mid-term results, and set the ethical bar for how builders work with customer data, patient communications, and AI systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own a multi-squad technical area (agentic patterns, integration surface, reliability, evaluation, voice and messaging, migration, or similar) and drive it to a measurably better place.
  • Partner with Heads of Segment across squads, the Primitives Squad, and the Knowledge and Tools Squad to graduate shared capabilities that multiply builder output.
  • Establish and execute on functional-level goals; define processes, standards, and best practices that other squads adopt.
  • Represent Artera's engineering practice in senior customer conversations, architecture reviews, and partnerships with EHR and platform vendors.
  • Diagnose systemic issues (quality, reliability, velocity, or cost) and lead the cross-squad work needed to fix them at the root.
  • Sponsor, mentor, and develop other builders; model the transition from personal output to organizational leverage.
  • Set the ethical standards for how builders work with customer data, patient communications, and AI systems.
Basic Qualifications
  • Industry-leading AI-native fluency: consistently demonstrates and teaches an AI-native practice that produces the output of a traditional team (hard requirement).
  • Typically 10+ years of professional engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated output, with multiple examples of systems you architected and ran at scale.
  • Recognized expertise in at least one domain that maps directly to Artera's critical capabilities (agentic platforms, EHR integrations, AWS-scale reliability, AI evaluation, voice and messaging, security engineering).
  • Track record of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams that materially changed business outcomes.
  • Strong commercial judgment: can frame technical choices in terms of customer impact, revenue, cost, and risk.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, including at senior customer and executive level.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority across multiple squads and functions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior staff or senior staff-level experience at a healthcare, AI-native, or agentic platform company.
  • Experience designing systems for multi-tenant, HIPAA/HITRUST/FedRAMP-constrained environments at scale.
  • Experience as a board, advisor, or external technical contributor in the healthcare or AI space.
  • Recognized external profile: publications, conference talks, or open source influence.
  • Experience leading incident response and post-incident organizational change.
OUR APPROACH TO WORK LOCATION

At Artera, we believe the best work happens when people are truly connected. Our AI services model has shown what’s possible when small, focused teams move fast together — the speed of collaboration, pace of career growth, and quality of what we build can become stronger when teams share space. As we grow, we want every new teammate to feel part of an in-person community from day one.

That’s why we are focusing our U.S. hiring in three cities, where we are investing in offices and building strong local teams:

  • Santa Barbara, CA (Our HQ)
  • Seattle, WA
  • Kansas City, KS/MO

Unless a role’s posting states otherwise, new U.S. roles are based in one of these three cities, and candidates should reside in (or be willing to relocate to) one of these areas. Each location follows an in-person schedule that reflects how our local teams work best; we’ll walk you through what to expect for your specific role and city during the interview process.

Focusing on offices and hiring in a few locations, rather than spreading thin across many cities, lets us invest deeply in each one so every team has real community, mentorship, and momentum in person.
