What is a senior rail engineer?

Senior Rail Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, overseeing, and managing railway infrastructure projects. Their role typically includes project planning, technical design, safety assessments, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring that railway systems meet regulatory standards. Senior Rail Engineers often supervise junior staff and contractors, provide expert guidance on complex engineering problems, and play a key role in delivering projects on time and within budget. They might work on new rail lines, upgrades, maintenance, or modernization projects across freight and passenger networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior rail engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Rail Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or mechanical engineering, rail systems, and project management, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional accreditation (such as PE or CEng). Proficiency in railway design software (like Bentley Rail Track or AutoCAD), knowledge of rail standards, and experience with signaling or track systems are typically required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative rail infrastructure projects that meet regulatory and operational standards.

What are some common challenges faced by senior rail engineers during large-scale infrastructure projects?

Senior Rail Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with strict safety and regulatory standards. Balancing technical requirements with budget constraints and adapting to unexpected site conditions can also be demanding. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as the role frequently involves leading interdisciplinary teams and resolving complex engineering issues in real time.

Job description

Who we are:
At ZayZoon, we are on a mission to save 10 million hardworking employees 10 billion dollars. We've created a financial empowerment platform that helps businesses of all sizes make a big impact on employee financial wellness.
We offer a variety of financial wellness services, like earned wage access, that allows employees to access their earned wages ahead of payday. With 74% of ZayZoon customers reporting reduced financial stress, we know our solutions help lead to happier and more productive employees. ZayZoon was also recognized for its growth in the 2025 Deloitte Technology Fast 50, 2025 Deloitte Technology Fast 500, and top-10 growth companies in Canada by CIX awards. Our recent funding extension has raised our Series B funding round to nearly $50 million USD Join us in shaping the future of employee financial wellness and building services that address the immediate needs of today's employees.
You might see a few cities listed, but no need to be in any of them! We're fully remote and hire across Canada and the U.S.
About the role:
At ZayZoon, we've built a financial empowerment platform that puts real money in the hands of employees who need it - and the software you write here is what makes that possible. Every feature shipped, every performance fix, and every clean integration is a direct part of how we deliver on that promise to people who are counting on us.
As a Senior Developer, you'll own your features end-to-end - from back-end architecture through front-end delivery, testing, and demo - and you'll bring both the speed to experiment and the craft to make those experiments production-ready when they matter. If you care as much about understanding root cause as you do about shipping the fix, this is the role for you.
Your impact:
  • You'll design, build, and maintain core web and mobile application features from back end to front end, owning delivery at every step of the way.
  • You'll dig into complex engineering problems - scale, concurrency, background processing, data ingestion - and back your solutions with data, not just instinct.
  • You'll integrate and maintain third-party tools and services, keeping our platform connected, reliable, and running smoothly.
  • You'll collaborate across Product, Customer Care, and Finance to scope new features, resolve production issues, and make sure what ships actually works in real life.
  • You'll strengthen the development pod through pull request reviews, pairing on complex stories, knowledge sharing, and mentorship that raises the whole team's game.
  • You'll use AI to streamline processes, reduce friction, and give time back for the work that matters.
  • You'll contribute to a secure, well-structured SDLC - writing code that's not just functional but maintainable, tested, and built to last.
You bring:
  • 4+ years of hands-on Ruby on Rails experience with production applications: you've built and shipped real features in Rails at scale, and you know the difference between code that works and code that holds up.
  • Solid front-end fundamentals: you're comfortable with core JavaScript, building UI features that hold up, and you've worked in React or React Native (or similar component-based frameworks). You don't need to be a front-end specialist, just someone who can move confidently through the front end when a feature calls for it.
  • Strong SQL and data analysis skills: you reach for data as a natural part of problem solving - whether that's diagnosing a performance issue, validating a hypothesis, or understanding how a feature behaves in production.
  • Deep engineering fundamentals: SOLID principles, domain-driven design, performant queries, and a solid testing practice (unit and integration) are how you work, not things you dust off for interviews.
  • A full-stack mentality: you own your features all the way through - back end, front end, automated tests, real-life testing, demos, and delivery. Every dev here does the same.
  • Experience with scale and concurrency challenges: you've worked through queuing, background processing, and efficient ingestion of third-party data, and you know where things tend to break before they do.
  • Agile fluency: sprint planning, story grooming, stand-ups, and scrum are part of your regular rhythm, not overhead.
  • The ability to shift gears between building fast and building clean: you know when an experiment calls for speed and when it's time to make the MVP something the codebase can carry for years.
  • Comfort with standard development tooling: Git, GitHub, Jira, and an editor you trust - plus a good eye for the right animated gif when a pull request finally merges.

Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of listed criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend to only apply when they check every box. Think you have what it takes, but not sure you check every box? Apply to the role anyways. We'd love to talk and determine together whether you could be a great fit!
Why you'll love working at ZayZoon:
  • Permanently Remote: Work from a desk, a coffee shop, or in the great outdoors - our jobs are fully remote, forever
  • Flexible Time Off: Whether it's a longer vacation to explore new horizons, a series of short breaks for regular rejuvenation, or stepping away for a new level of mastery in a skillset - our "You-do-You" time off program caters to the diverse and evolving lifestyles of our team with a maximum of 5 weeks vacation
  • Instant Benefits: All full-time employees get access to medical, vision, and dental benefits from their very first day including increased mental health coverage and a wellness stipend
  • Plus: Inclusive parental leave top-up, earned wage access, real time market data for salaries, a supportive culture for lifelong learners and more

What you can expect from us:
Every application will be reviewed by our team - we're committed to giving each application the attention it deserves because we know how important this step is for you. We want to make sure you're always in the loop and will respond to every application.
So go ahead and hit that apply button with confidence, knowing that we're here for you every step of the way! We can't wait to hear from you.
