What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Radar Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Radar Engineer, you need a deep understanding of radar system design, signal processing, and electromagnetic theory, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, FPGA development environments, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications like IEEE are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills distinguish top professionals in this role. These skills are crucial for developing innovative radar solutions, ensuring system reliability, and effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some of the typical challenges a Senior Radar Engineer faces when leading multi-disciplinary project teams?

Senior Radar Engineers often oversee teams that include software, hardware, and systems engineers, requiring strong coordination and communication skills. One common challenge is integrating diverse technical components into a cohesive radar system, while ensuring that all team members align with project goals and timelines. Additionally, balancing technical innovation with regulatory compliance and resource constraints can be demanding. Successful Senior Radar Engineers proactively address these challenges through effective collaboration, clear documentation, and continuous stakeholder engagement.

What are Senior Radar Engineers?

Senior Radar Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain radar systems used in various industries such as defense, aviation, meteorology, and automotive safety. They lead technical teams, oversee complex radar projects, and ensure the systems meet performance and safety standards. Their responsibilities include signal processing, hardware integration, troubleshooting, and often mentoring junior engineers. Senior Radar Engineers typically have extensive backgrounds in electrical engineering, signal processing, and hands-on radar technology experience.

What is the difference between Senior Radar Engineer vs Radar Systems Engineer?

Summary
At Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), we develop advanced technologies that help our nation better understand, sense, and operate within complex natural and human-made environments. Our work spans multidisciplinary research and applied development, advancing ideas from foundational concepts to mission-relevant prototypes. We are seeking a Senior Radar Research Engineer to provide technical leadership in the development of advanced radar sensing technologies supporting national security missions. This role focuses on shaping and leading radar-focused research programs spanning radar signal processing, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and radio frequency (RF) sensing, while advancing technologies from concept through prototype demonstration. The successful candidate will serve as the Institute's technical authority in radar/RF sensing, guiding strategy, architecture, and technical execution while leading multiple research programs and growing MTRI's radar sensing portfolio through strong sponsor engagement.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties
1. Develop, grow, and sustain a portfolio of radar/RF research programs supporting multiple staff and initiatives.
2. Identify, capture, and secure new research funding through opportunity development, sponsor engagement, and competitive proposal execution.
3. Define and maintain a multi-year radar research and growth roadmap aligned with sponsor priorities (DoD, AFRL, DARPA, etc.).
4. Lead and coordinate technical execution across multiple concurrent research programs.
5. Serve as Principal Investigator on multiple funded efforts and ensure successful delivery of technical objectives.
6. Serve as the technical authority in radar/RF sensing, guiding architecture, algorithm development, and system design decisions.
