Senior Quantitative Developer information

What is a senior quantitative developer?

A Senior Quantitative Developer is an experienced professional who combines advanced programming skills with deep knowledge of mathematical and statistical modeling to design, implement, and optimize complex financial algorithms and trading systems. They work closely with quantitative analysts and traders to translate mathematical models into efficient, production-ready code, often focusing on areas such as risk management, pricing, and market data analysis. In addition to strong coding abilities, typically in languages like C++, Python, or Java, they are expected to have expertise in financial markets, data structures, and performance optimization. Senior Quantitative Developers often mentor junior team members and contribute to the strategic direction of technology and model development within their firm.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior quantitative developer?

To thrive as a Senior Quantitative Developer, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and financial theory, typically supported by an advanced degree in a quantitative field. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java, and experience using quantitative libraries, databases, and version control systems are essential, alongside knowledge of relevant industry tools like MATLAB or R. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities enable effective development and implementation of quantitative models, ensuring robust financial analysis and supporting critical business decisions.

How does a senior quantitative developer typically collaborate with quantitative researchers and traders?

A Senior Quantitative Developer works closely with quantitative researchers to translate their mathematical models into robust, production-ready code. They also partner with traders to understand their workflow needs and ensure that trading systems are reliable, efficient, and responsive to market conditions. Effective communication is key, as the developer must bridge the gap between research insights and operational trading platforms. This collaboration often involves iterative feedback, rapid prototyping, and ongoing support to adapt systems to new strategies or market data.

What is the difference between Senior Quantitative Developer vs Quantitative Analyst?

AspectSenior Quantitative DeveloperQuantitative Analyst

Work EnvironmentDevelops trading algorithms, implements models, collaborates with tech teamsPerforms data analysis, risk assessment, supports trading strategies
Employer & Industry UsageFinancial firms, hedge funds, investment banksAsset management firms, hedge funds, banks

The main difference is that Senior Quantitative Developers focus on building and implementing trading models and software, while Quantitative Analysts primarily analyze data and develop trading strategies. Both roles require strong quantitative skills, but the developer role emphasizes programming and system development, whereas analysts focus more on data analysis and research.

Job description

Job Summary

The Technical Program Management Office (TPMO) in NetApp’s Cloud Storage Services (CSS) business unit leads the programs behind first-party, fully managed cloud storage services delivered across major cloud providers. If you are energized by owning complex, high-impact hardware and infrastructure programs end to end, partnering across engineering and operations organizations, and turning ambiguous demand signals into executable supply and lifecycle plans, this role is for you.

As a Senior Technical Program Manager, you will contribute to end-to-end strategic capacity planning and infrastructure lifecycle programs for NetApp's CSS portfolio. These programs include capacity forecast and planning cadence that translates customer demand, regional growth into a hardware supply plan; hardware build-out, refresh, and decommissioning programs; and coordinate cross-functional execution that turns those plans into deployed, optimized, and retired capacity on schedule.

This position reports to the Director, TPMO, Cloud Storage Services, and leads virtual cross-functional teams spanning Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, FP&A, and external cloud partner organizations. You will operate with significant autonomy, devise solutions from limited information, hold cross-functional owners accountable for committed dates, and surface early-warning signals that keep services ahead of demand.

Responsibilities
  • Own hardware capacity planning and forecasting across regions and service offerings, including launches, expansions, refreshes, and decommissions.
  • Drive quarterly and annual capacity planning and alignment across internal and external stakeholders; translate forecasts into annual funding plans, equipment procurement plans and hardware deployment schedules
  • Run capacity governance cadence – steering meetings, KPIs, dashboards, risk registers, and escalations – with clear owners and outcomes. Identify structural risks, lead options analysis, and deliver executive updates on capacity health, plan vs. actual, and decisions required.
  • Lead hardware lifecycle, and decommissioning programs from build-out through refresh, reclamation, and retirement.
  • Partner with cloud providers, Product Management, Sales, Supply Chain and additional internal teams on demand forecasting, equipment prepositioning, service dependency readiness, and equipment supply commitments.
  • Identify opportunities to repurpose, consolidate, migrate, or extend infrastructure assets to maximize return on investment while maintaining customer readiness targets. Drive programs that improve storage-fleet efficiency, improve environmental sustainability, and optimize capital investments.
  • Contribute to CSS TPMO capacity-planning practices and champion NetApp’s Values in every partner interaction.
Job Requirements
  • 10+ years of progressive technical program management, engineering program management, or infrastructure planning experience, including 3+ years leading hardware capacity planning, supply planning, data-center infrastructure, or hardware lifecycle programs at scale.
  • Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of complex, cross-functional programs with material CapEx or infrastructure scope spanning multiple geographies and business functions. Ability to balance technical, operational, financial, and customer considerations when making infrastructure investment decisions.
  • Solid technical fluency in storage hardware (controllers, SSD/HDD media, shelves, networking) and cloud infrastructure economics; able to reason for capacity, performance, cost, and supply chain lead times.
  • Strong quantitative and modeling skills: comfortable building, stress-testing, and defending demand and capacity forecasts; fluent with BI / analytics tooling (Power BI, Tableau, SQL) and confident working with large datasets.
  • Track record of influencing in a highly matrixed environment across Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, and external partner organizations without direct authority.
  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, devise solutions from limited information, and take a longer-term view; identify challenges and blockers ahead of time and provide alternate solutions under significant constraints.
  • Experience partnering with cloud provider or large-scale infrastructure organizations on capacity, supply, deployment, or region-readiness programs strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to compress complex technical and financial tradeoffs into crisp executive narratives.
  • Fluent in JIRA, Confluence, and Microsoft Office; experience with Agile delivery practices.
  • Storage industry experience and PMP certification are a plus.
  • Embodies NetApp’s Values and High Achievement Principles – Customer Trust, Get Stuff Done, and Build Belonging – with a consistent bias for outcomes, candor, and ownership.
Education
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Supply Chain, or related technical discipline.

Compensation:
The target salary range for this position is 170,000 - 253,000 USD.
