Job description

Sr Quality Metallurgist 

The Sr Quality Metallurgist provides technical leadership and metallurgical support for the Melt Shop, Rolling Mill, and Logistics operations. This role ensures that products meet customer requirements, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and strengthens the mill's quality systems and metallurgical capabilities.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager, the Sr Quality Metallurgist is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and implementing product and process improvement opportunities. This includes planning and supervising product trials, conducting metallurgical evaluations, supporting customer inquiries, and ensuring compliance with quality standards and procedures.

The role also supports the Quality Assurance program through document control, calibration management, internal audits, corrective actions, and data preparation for Management Review. The Metallurgist will collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, and quality teams to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent production.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate customer requirements and ensure alignment with mill capabilities.

  • Conduct metallurgical investigations, including rootcause and failure analyses.

  • Lead product trials and report findings to operations and leadership.

  • Support customer visits, technical reviews, and product performance evaluations.

  • Review and maintain procedures, specifications, job aids, and SAP SKU configurations.

  • Analyze production data to monitor performance and recommend improvements.

  • Provide technical support to operations during routine production and problemsolving.

  • Assist with costjustification efforts for equipment or process changes.

  • Stay current with industry technologies and share best practices across the organization.

  • Support quality system requirements including audits, calibrations, and corrective actions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or related Engineering field.

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in a steelmaking or heavy manufacturing environment preferred.

  • Working knowledge of steelmaking, refining, casting, and/or rolling processes.

  • Ability to apply metallurgical principles to improve product quality and process efficiency.

  • Strong communication skills for customer interaction and internal reporting.

  • Ability to interpret and analyze production data and metallurgical results.

  • Willingness to travel as needed to support customer and technical requirements.
