What is a senior project cargo specialist?

Senior Project Cargo specialists are logistics professionals who oversee the transportation and handling of large, heavy, or complex cargo, often for major industrial projects. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the safe and efficient movement of oversized or high-value items, such as machinery, construction materials, or energy equipment. Their role requires extensive experience in logistics, knowledge of international shipping regulations, and strong project management skills. Senior Project Cargo specialists work closely with clients, carriers, and regulatory authorities to ensure all aspects of the cargo movement comply with safety and legal requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by senior project cargo professionals and how can they be managed effectively?

Senior Project Cargo professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating complex logistics for oversized or heavy-lift shipments, navigating regulatory requirements across multiple countries, and managing tight project timelines. Effective management involves meticulous planning, proactive risk assessment, and clear communication with stakeholders, including clients, carriers, and customs officials. Leveraging industry relationships and staying updated on the latest transportation regulations can also help mitigate delays and ensure successful project delivery.

Company Overview

Founded in 1971, BNP Associates, Inc. is a full-service consulting and engineering firm specializing in airport and warehousing infrastructure projects worldwide. Over its 54+ years of operation, BNP has completed thousands of projects, from small terminal projects to the world’s largest mechanized material handling systems.

We are recognized for our leadership in baggage handling systems, checked baggage security screening, aircraft apron systems, air cargo terminals, and construction administration. Our clients include airlines, airports, government agencies, and transportation infrastructure specialists worldwide. BNP serves as a key design partner for complex projects that drive the future of air transportation and logistics.

Job Description

As a Sr. Project Engineer/Manager, you will serve as the primary liaison between project stakeholders, contractors, and BNP, acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) across the full lifecycle of projects. You will work in a dynamic office and field environment, operating under the guidance of the Regional Director and other Senior members, and in close coordination with BNP’s global engineering teams.

Beyond project delivery, you will play an active role in building BNP’s presence across Oceania. Supporting business development, presenting to new and prospective contacts, and helping to establish BNP Associates as the premier baggage handling and cargo consultant in the region. You will also provide mentorship to junior staff as our local team grows.

Our offices are intended to be small, collaborative communities. No two projects are the same — the work is always fresh, challenging, and rewarding.

Job Responsibilities

As a Sr. Project Engineer/Manager, your responsibilities may include:

  • Assessing project sites for feasibility and operational requirements
  • Developing and reviewing CAD drawings, engineering designs, specifications, and technical reports
  • Collaborating with architects, designers, engineers, and trades across multidisciplinary project teams
  • Managing project budgets, programmes, and logistics including RFI responses and punch list resolution
  • Preparing project status reports, cost estimates, and technical studies
  • Conducting and reviewing system simulations and verifying compliance with project requirements
  • Providing technical and specialist support to staff at other BNP offices on matters including BHS controls and system installation, electrical systems design, and emerging trends in airport ground handling and baggage operations
  • Mentoring new and junior staff within BNP Associates

Qualifications

Below is an outline of the qualifications for this position. We have many team members who fall outside of these criteria, so please do not be dissuaded from applying if you do not meet every requirement:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in a Sr. Project Engineer/Manager capacity or related technical field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder projects from initiation through to delivery
  • Strong stakeholder-facing skills with the ability to build and maintain trusted professional relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing technical reports and project documentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to multitask across multiple projects simultaneously
  • Flexibility to travel within Australia on a regular basis

The following experience would be advantageous:

  • Prior experience with baggage handling systems (BHS), automated material handling, or airport operations
  • Background in ground handling, logistics, or warehousing
  • Familiarity with Revit, or AutoCAD for design purposes
  • Existing networks within the aviation, airport, or logistics industry in Oceania

Right To Work

Applicants must hold unrestricted working rights in Australia at the time of application. This means you must be an Australian citizen, hold a permanent or resident visa, or hold an open work visa with no employer restrictions. BNP Associates is not currently in a position to offer visa sponsorship or take on employer-tied visa obligations.
