What is a senior programmer?

Senior Programmers are experienced software developers who take on advanced coding tasks and often provide technical leadership within their teams. They are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems, as well as mentoring junior developers. Senior Programmers typically have strong problem-solving skills, deep knowledge of programming languages, and experience with software architecture. They may also be involved in code reviews, setting best practices, and collaborating with other departments to deliver high-quality software solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Programmer, you need advanced proficiency in programming languages, solid software development experience, and often a relevant degree or equivalent expertise. Familiarity with frameworks, version control systems like Git, and agile development tools is typically required, and certifications in cloud platforms or specific technologies can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills enable effective collaboration and mentorship within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering robust, scalable solutions and driving technical excellence in complex projects.

How do senior programmers typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on team productivity?

Senior Programmers often play a key mentorship role by guiding junior developers through code reviews, pair programming, and sharing best practices. They provide technical leadership and help troubleshoot complex issues, ensuring code quality and knowledge transfer across the team. This mentorship not only fosters professional growth for junior members but also contributes to stronger team cohesion and faster problem-solving, ultimately boosting overall productivity and project success.

What is the difference between Senior Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectSenior ProgrammerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; extensive coding experienceBachelor's degree often preferred; coding skills essential
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, project-based work, often in tech or software companiesSimilar environments; involved in designing, coding, testing software
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and other industries requiring software solutionsCommonly used in software firms, startups, and corporate IT departments

While both roles involve coding and software development, a Senior Programmer typically has more experience, takes on complex tasks, and may mentor junior staff. A Software Developer focuses on designing and building software applications, often with less emphasis on leadership or advanced technical oversight.

What do senior programmers do?

Senior programmers design, develop, and maintain software applications, often leading projects and mentoring junior team members. They analyze user requirements, write efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and ensure software quality using programming languages and development tools. Their role also involves reviewing code, optimizing performance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions.

These systems provide automated chemical analysis, monitoring, and dosing control of copper and specialty metal plating baths, helping customers maintain process stability, improve yield, and maximize tool uptime.

The ideal candidate combines strong analytical chemistry knowledge, semiconductor manufacturing experience, and hands-on troubleshooting skills. This role requires direct engagement with customer engineering, process, and manufacturing teams to ensure optimal system performance and customer satisfaction.

This position supports customers throughout the United States with primary coverage across the Northeast region (NJ, NY, CT, MA, VT, and surrounding areas) and requires frequent travel to customer sites.

Pay Range: $100,000- $125,000 Annually (DOE)

At Nova, we help the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers improve yield and accelerate innovation through advanced metrology solutions. By combining expertise in physics, optics, software, algorithms, and engineering, we push the boundaries of semiconductor process control.

Joining Nova means working alongside passionate innovators who thrive on solving complex technical challenges in a collaborative, global environment.

Role Responsibilities:

Equipment Installation & Support

  • Install, commission, qualify, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair Nova chemical metrology systems at customer sites.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, upgrades, retrofits, software updates, and new system installations.
  • Drive rapid resolution of mechanical, electrical, fluidic, software, and analytical measurement issues through both onsite and remote support.
  • Support customers under warranty and service agreements while consistently meeting service-level expectations.

Analytical Chemistry & Process Support

  • Troubleshoot chemical measurement and dosing systems used to monitor and control semiconductor plating bath chemistry.
  • Analyze system performance data, measurement results, and process trends to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support customers in maintaining critical plating bath parameters including metal concentration, additives, suppressors, accelerators, levelers, acids, and related chemistry components.
  • Partner with customer process engineers to optimize metrology system performance and measurement accuracy.

Customer Success

  • Train customer engineers, technicians, and operators on system operation, maintenance, calibration, and best practices.
  • Build trusted relationships with customer process, manufacturing, equipment, and facilities teams.
  • Provide technical support during process qualifications, tool evaluations, and production ramp activities.
  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point for complex field issues.

Continuous Improvement

  • Document service activities, maintenance records, technical findings, and corrective actions using Nova reporting systems.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and recommend stocking levels at select key customer accounts.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Applications, and R&D teams to resolve technical issues and improve product performance.
  • Provide voice-of-customer feedback to support future hardware, software, and chemistry roadmap development.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting semiconductor manufacturing equipment, analytical instrumentation, plating process equipment, or equivalent customer-facing technical roles.
  • Strong understanding of analytical chemistry principles and chemical measurement techniques.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex electromechanical, fluidic, and automated systems.
  • Experience working in semiconductor manufacturing or cleanroom environments.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis using system logs, process data, measurement trends, and customer observations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface directly with customers at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple customer priorities simultaneously.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% within the United States, primarily across the Northeast region, with occasional international travel for training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting semiconductor metrology, process control, analytical instrumentation, or chemical monitoring systems.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor electroplating processes including copper, tin, nickel, or advanced packaging applications.
  • Experience with semiconductor back-end, advanced packaging, PCB, or panel-level packaging manufacturing.
  • Understanding of plating bath chemistry management, additive control, and chemical dosing systems.
  • Familiarity with chemical analysis techniques such as titration, UV-Vis spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemical measurements, or related methods.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor equipment communication protocols including SECS/GEM.
