Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal Materials and Process Engineer with the desire to learn new technologies to join our innovative Software Technologies Organization to help develop, enhance and maintain software on cutting edge products and systems. Candidates will support ongoing physical analysis and mechanical testing for a variety of materials, including composites, metals, and polymers, along with laboratory improvements to allow for expansion of these capabilities within the Materials and Processes Teams.
We are looking for you to join our team as a Principal/Sr. Principal Material and Process Engineer based out of Linthicum, MD.
This position can be filled as a Principal Material and Process Engineer or a Senior Principal Material Process Engineer.
Summary of Role:
As a Principal/Sr. Principal Material and Process Engineer within the Material Analysis Organization, you will have a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be a part of our Enterprise-wide digital transformation. By ensuring quality products are being produced throughout the lifecycle of our hardware, we continue to evolve how we deliver critical national defense products and capabilities for the warfighter. Our success is grounded in our ability to embrace change, move quickly and continuously drive innovation. The successful candidate will be collaborative, open, transparent, and team oriented with a focus on team empowerment & shared responsibility, flexibility, continuous learning and a culture of automation.
Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Safely execute and document material characterization performed on materials including, but not limited to, manufactured metallic parts, printed wiring boards, adhesives and coatings, for property analysis and quality verification.
  • Interface with manufacturing and engineering to identify opportunities for process development and opportunities for existing process improvement with respect to material use.
  • Be able to independently develop test plans, lead small groups of engineers to execute testing, and draw conclusions from the results as well as document and communicate results to necessary stakeholders.
  • Work with a team of diverse individuals to provide data driven decisions for material qualification and verification.
  • Be able to review and understand internal, industry, and customer requirements to ensure our test methods and test results align.
  • Participate in recommendations and approvals for program designs regarding material use and/or investigation and approval of new material introductions to the BWI site.
  • Execute IRAD/MTA projects with limited guidance from a senior engineer. Support project execution to maintain cost, schedule, and technical deliverables.
  • Apply process improvement and engineering methodologies to effectively improve and align sector, division, business unit, and section level processes, and coordinate the evaluation, documentation, and implementation of identified chemical processes to the engineering team.
  • Serve as a POC from the Materials and Processes group to Program Managers, Cell Managers, or other stakeholders on the capabilities and utility of our group.

This position is contingent upon the successful transfer of a US Government Secret clearance prior to start
Basic Qualifications for a Principal Material and Process Engineer:
Bachelor's Degree with 5 years of experience, master's degree with 3 years of experience, Ph.D. with 1 years of experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • U.S Citizenship is required
  • Active US Government Secret Clearance required to start.
  • 5 years of experience incorporating feedback from various sources, including technicians, operators, and engineers, to ensure technical and ergonomic capabilities in processes.
  • 5 years of experience with establishing standard operating procedures and engaging the operations team to ensure these are followed.
  • 5 years of professional experience in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials engineering is required

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Material and Process Engineer:
Bachelor's Degree with 8 years of experience, master's degree with 6 years of experience, Ph.D. with 4 years of experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • U.S Citizenship is required
  • Active US Government Secret Clearance required to start.
  • 8 years of experience incorporating feedback from various sources, including technicians, operators, and engineers, to ensure technical and ergonomic capabilities in processes.
  • 8 years of experience with establishing standard operating procedures and engaging the operations team to ensure these are followed.
  • 8 years of professional experience in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials engineering is required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong technical writing skill and the ability to write process documentation with minimal oversight.
  • Familiarity with industry and government specifications related to testing and performance of composite materials.
  • Establishing standard operating procedures and engaging the operations team to ensure these are followed.
  • Experience testing and reviewing performance data in accordance with internal and industry specifications.
  • Ability to work independently and under tight schedule constraints to deliver quantifiable results with documented recommendations for material use.
  • Ability to read and understand established processes while looking for opportunities for existing process improvement to increase output while decreasing costs.

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $123,400.00 - $185,000.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
