What does a senior process development engineer do?

A Senior Process Development Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. They often lead teams in scaling up processes from the laboratory to full production, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement new technologies or methods. Additionally, they collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production, to ensure processes meet regulatory and safety standards. Their expertise helps companies maintain competitive advantages and meet production goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior process development engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Process Development Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or mechanical engineering, process optimization, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, process simulation tools (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), and Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications is often required. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement. These skills are crucial for developing efficient, scalable processes that meet quality standards and business goals.

What are some common challenges a senior process development engineer may face when scaling up a new process from the lab to full production?

Senior Process Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining product quality and consistency when transitioning from small-scale laboratory experiments to large-scale manufacturing. This process typically involves troubleshooting equipment limitations, optimizing process parameters, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is crucial to address these challenges and achieve a smooth scale-up. Adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate unexpected issues that may arise during this transition.

Job description

SENIOR PROCESS ENGINEER – INJECTION MOLDING

DEMGY Pacific | Tacoma, Washington

Master Your Craft. Own Your Process. Get It Right.

Are you the person others turn to when an injection molding process must be precise, repeatable, and right?

Do you take pride in mastering your craft, solving technical problems, and producing work that meets an exceptionally high standard?

At DEMGY, we have been advancing manufacturing since 1947. We offer the stability of an established global organization with a family atmosphere where expertise is respected, your voice is heard, and you can keep developing your craft.

This is an opportunity for an experienced injection molding professional who values quality over shortcuts, focused work over constant distractions, and autonomy to take ownership of a process from problem to solution.

What You’ll Own

Reporting to the Molding Manager, you will serve as a subject matter expert in injection molding, responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining processes that improve quality, scrap, cost, workflow, and on-time delivery.

You will:

  • Develop and optimize injection molding processes for new and existing programs.
  • Troubleshoot molding conditions and identify root causes of cosmetic, dimensional, and structural issues.
  • Conduct DOE/window studies and establish robust, repeatable processing parameters.
  • Apply scientific injection molding principles to improve consistency, quality, and performance.
  • Advise on tooling, fixtures, equipment, automation, materials, and process improvements.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and identify potential risks affecting scrap, labor, quality, and part cost.
  • Develop and maintain controlled process documentation and procedures.
  • Lead targeted 5S and Lean manufacturing improvements.
  • Partner directly with customers, suppliers, and internal teams as the injection molding technical expert.
  • Train and develop molding-floor employees on equipment and injection molding processes.

What You Bring

You are a hands-on technical professional who takes pride in knowing your craft and continuously getting better at it. You work well independently, stay focused, and believe the details matter.

You bring:

  • Strong hands-on injection molding processing and troubleshooting capability.
  • Knowledge of engineered resins and material properties.
  • Understanding of molds, tooling, auxiliary equipment, automation, and molding systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to translate technical information into practical solutions.
  • A disciplined approach to safety, documentation, accuracy, and quality.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision while building strong one-to-one working relationships.

Experience in aerospace manufacturing and certifications such as Scientific Injection Molding, Master Molder, or equivalent injection molding education are highly valued.

Why DEMGY?

You have invested years developing your expertise. We believe that expertise should be trusted, respected, and given room to grow.

At DEMGY, you can focus on doing high-quality technical work, deepen your knowledge, solve meaningful manufacturing challenges, and build your career within a company that has been creating stability and opportunity since 1947.

Global Resources. Family Atmosphere. Stability. Expertise. Impact.
