How much do senior polymer scientist jobs pay per year?
What is a senior polymer scientist?
A Senior Polymer Scientist is a highly experienced professional who researches, develops, and optimizes polymer materials for various applications, such as packaging, healthcare, or electronics. They lead projects involving polymer synthesis, processing, and characterization while collaborating with cross-functional teams. Their responsibilities often include developing new materials, improving existing formulations, ensuring product quality, and staying updated on industry advancements. Additionally, they may mentor junior scientists and support regulatory compliance efforts.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a senior polymer scientist?
Senior Polymer Scientists are responsible for designing and conducting experiments to develop new polymer materials or improve existing ones, analyzing data using advanced instrumentation, and troubleshooting any technical challenges that arise in the laboratory. They often oversee or mentor junior scientists and research associates, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as engineering and manufacturing, and prepare technical reports or presentations for stakeholders. Additionally, they stay up-to-date with industry trends and compliance standards to ensure research remains innovative and aligned with business goals. This multifaceted role requires balancing hands-on laboratory work with strategic planning and cross-team communication, making each day dynamic and intellectually stimulating.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior polymer scientist?
A Senior Polymer Scientist typically requires an advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.Sc.) in Polymer Science, Chemistry, or Materials Science, along with extensive experience in polymer synthesis, characterization, and application development. Familiarity with analytical instrumentation (e.g., NMR, FTIR, GPC), laboratory information management systems, and regulatory standards is essential, and certifications in safety or laboratory management can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, collaboration, and excellent communication skills help drive innovation and effective teamwork. These competencies are critical for leading complex research projects, ensuring high-quality outputs, and fostering advancements in polymer technologies.

Job description
We're seeking a Senior Product Development and Process Engineer who's ready to put your skills to work on projects that matter - and build a career with a company that's building North America.
Job Title: Senior Product Development and Process Engineer | Req ID: 17618 | HR Contact: Tyler Stegall | Location: Building Envelope - Fishers, IN
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a high-caliber Senior Product and Process Development Engineer to lead the lifecycle development of next-generation commercial roofing systems. In this role, you will blend deep polymer science and engineering fundamentals with hands-on manufacturing and customer insights. You will design, model, test, and scale advanced roofing solutions-specifically focusing on TPO, EPDM, and Polyisocyanurate (ISO) materials-while bridging the gap between R&D, plant operations, and field performance.
WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH
Product Innovation & System-Level Design
- Lead the conceptualization, design, and development of commercial roofing products and full-assembly systems from inception to commercialization.
- Apply a systems-engineering approach to ensure components (membranes, insulation, adhesives, and fasteners) perform cohesively under diverse environmental stresses.
- Translate market trends and customer pain points into concrete, innovative technical solutions.
Advanced Modeling & Experimental Testing
- Leverage CAE tools (FEA/CFD) for structural, thermal, impact, and wind-uplift performance simulations, or for process simulations to accelerate product development and plant troubleshooting.
- Design and execute rigorous physical testing protocols (e.g., tensile, tear, accelerated weathering, thermal efficiency) to validate FEA models and ensure compliance with industry standards (FM, UL, ASTM).
Material & Process Engineering
- Leverage deep technical expertise in polymer chemistry, structure-property relationships, formulation design, and compounding.
- Optimize the processing of single-ply membranes (TPO, EPDM) and rigid foam insulation (ISO), ensuring robust blending, extrusion, and curing/foaming performance.
- Troubleshoot complex plant processing issues related to polymer rheology, degradation, and raw material variability to eliminate defects and improve yields.
Voice of Customer & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Act as a technical bridge to the field, capturing customer feedback to refine product designs and resolve complex field performance issues.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, Operations, Quality Assurance, and Procurement to drive projects to completion on time and within budget
- Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas.
- Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. A Master's degree or Ph.D. is a plus.
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in polymer formulation, material characterization, and process development, specifically within the commercial roofing or building materials industry.
- Technical Mastery:
- Proven expertise in TPO, EPDM, and Polyisocyanurate (ISO) chemistry, melt processing, characterization, and application.
- Strong understanding of polymer characterization techniques (e.g., DSC, TGA, DMA, rheology) and their application to product design.
- Proficiency with standard FEA software (e.g., Hyperworks Suites, ANSYS, Abaqus, or SolidWorks Simulation) applied to non-linear polymer materials or structural assemblies.
- Strong root-cause analysis and troubleshooting skills in a continuous polymer extrusion or foaming manufacturing environment.
- Mindset: Innovation-driven, highly analytical, and deeply customer-focused with excellent cross-functional communication skills.
Additional Requirements:
- Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection
Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must
be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive salary
- Retirement Savings: Choose from 401(k) pre-tax and/or Roth after-tax savings
- Medical, Dental, Disability and Life Insurance
- Holistic Health & Well-being programs
- Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) & Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for health and dependent care
- Vision and other Voluntary benefits and discounts
- Paid time off & paid holidays
- Paid Parental Leave (maternity & paternity)
- Educational Assistance Program
