Job description

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: 

Safety

  • Maintain a safe work environment at all times:  Operate machinery only when trained to do so and in a safe manner
  • Make sure that a machine is properly shut down prior to maintenance and after work has been completed
  • Wear the proper clothing and make use of the proper safety equipment
  • Participate in training, always try to understand why instructions are given rather than simply performing tasks
  • Report safety issues in a prompt fashion

Assistant

  • Assist Operator as required and instructed
  • Prepare bottom sheets or get pallets ready
  • Stack boxes based on the Specifications contained in the Master
  • Fill out Load Tags
  • Band/Strap Boxes
  • Assist in feeding machine
  • Push boxes on the line
  • Move carts or pallets
  • Assist in Machine Set up
  • Gather and move material
  • Clean, sweep, vacuum area
  • Clean Machine
  • Learn by doing
  • Ask questions of Operators
  • Act as Operator under the Supervision of the Operator
  • Assist in shutting down equipment
  • Return pallets, neatly stack in pallet storage area
  • Throw away ink buckets
Helper
  • Know how to read Plant Masters
  • Call for paper
  • Check to see that paper is the correct size, material, color, flute, measure scores, etc.
  • Locate Order if necessary
  • Transport Order to the machine
  • Check Order #
  • Cut straps
  • Discard top sheets
  • Pick the scraps hanging from the boxes
  • Stack the boxes so that they are easier to feed
  • Turn boxes in the right direction
  • Feed Boxes into the machine
  • Ensure that the Boxes are feeding correctly; notify the Operator if they are turning, feeding wrong, etc.
  • Assist the stacker if finished with feeding

Operator

  • Ensure that the machine is operated in a safe fashion at all times, shut down the machine immediately if necessary
  • Receive the schedule and Master’s from the Shift Supervisor
  • Review Masters to understand scope of work to be performed (Determine specifications of the job, if there are overages, shortages, special requests, etc.)
  • Schedule orders to maximize efficiency
  • Enter order and run information into the machine properly
  • Set Up Machine
  • Follow Ink Management Procedure (Color, pigmentation mixing, viscosity, pH, “watering down”, etc.)
  • Coordinate with the Plate Mounter and Die Maker
  • Perform Set up
  • Calibrate and adjust Machine as necessary
  • Make sure print and labels are on the box correctly
  • Coordinate Label and print quality with Senior Graphics Designer
  • Check slot depth
  • Measure slots and scores
  • Check glue joint for proper seal
  • Match color with swatch
  • Ensure that boxes are stacked correctly (bottom sheets, pattern, number per pallet, load trays, samples if applicable)
  • Always run the first box, then “set it up” and examine to ensure proper quality
  • Embody accountability for machine production
  • Ensure quality for machine production
  • Train helpers and Feeders
  • Also examine incoming material to ensure quality of previous crews if work has already been performed at another machine
  • If questions arise, consult with the Shift Supervisor
  • If completed with work, or if crew is not busy due to maintenance problems, direct crew to the Shift Supervisor to ask about assignment of other duties
  • Monitor and dispose of scrap
  • Review Machine Efficiency Reports to ensure proper performance
  • If performance is above average make sure that Helpers understand why, offer suggestions concerning improved production method to Supervisor if applicable
  • If performance is low and assistance can be offered, notify Supervisor (Problems with Helper, training issues, maintenance problems, material problems, etc.)
  • Ensure that the machine and workstation are maintained properly and cleaned on a regular basis
  • If machine problems occur, notify the Shift Supervisor and coordinate repairs with the Maintenance Supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

EXPERIENCE: 

Minimum two years hands-on experience in these or related functions

EDUCATION: 

       High School diploma/GED
